Nebraska is a great place, but relying on what worked 20 - 30 years ago is killing that program. I remember going on my visit, they were the first to use field turf in their facilities, plus they were years ahead of other schools with their nutrition and exercise physiology programs.
They've had a lot of different faces running the program since Osborne. They even tried to hire Osborne back as part of the leadership to try and resuscitate the patient. They've tried the power approach and they've tried all kinds of spread principles. What they haven't done is recruit like an elite.
My only personal observation from afar is that its getting impossible to recruit the Southeastern players to these more northern terrains. It's not just Nebraska, a lot of B1G teams can't pillage-the-village like days of yesteryear.
Frost will just have to do it with great coaching. He had better keep Tom Osborne on speed dial.

I just don’t see Nebraska coming back elite. USC can do it with the right hire. Need institutional commitment. Washington can be a great job.

They were awful when I was in school, and then Tosh went up there and they started recruiting on a different level but still an average team. Nebraska has been awful since Solich refused to adapt. I'd love to see them turn it around. Coach Osborne and Coach Darlington are two of my favorite coaches, ever.
Washington can be a great job.

I don't know if Nebraska can get back into a perennial top 5 program position, but there's no excuse for them being 6-6 every year either. With the right coach and some hard work at recruiting their old honey holes in Texas and the west coast, they can be just like Wisconsin: a dark horse contender for the B1G, a perennial B1G west contender, a solid bowl team every year and a spoiler for someone. I think Frost can get them there, it's just not an overnight job. He's not recruiting the fertile grounds of central and south Florida, so it may take him a few classes. Step 1 is to get some skill players and to shore up that once proud defense.

When I was a kid growing up Nebraska was a monster. Osbourne used to recruit hard Texas, California, Florida and the east coast. They were top 5 for 25 consecutive years. I just don't ever see that coming back even with new football facilities.

Nebraska has to realize who they are and adapt to that. The HC has to have a eye for diamonds in the rough. The Walk-On program is being brought back but the issue with high schools is a concerning one. Wisconsin is the kind of program Nebraska can achieve ironically.

Yeah, but did Osborne get the five stars from those regions like you see with Saban, O., and Dabo? Maybe on the offensive line, but Osborne was known for getting unheralded players that fit his system.

You are right, maybe not 5 stars, but their system was a machine

He would raid Florida, Texas, and California

He recruited elite skilled players and developed the trench guys with the best weight room in the country. His success was due to elite recruiting to go along with elite development. On top of that he had a great system that was tough to defend and loyal assistant coaches that stuck around for years. Osbourne was legit. They fired his successor for a 9-3 record. Solich may have held it together better than the failures that followed him.

That's why you never want to be the coach that follows THE coach.
Great coaches make it look a lot easier than it is.

Some evaluators of the time had Nebraska consistently recruiting at a top 10-25 type level with occasional top 10 classes such as in 95 and 96. Other evaluators, or Max Emfinger in particular, had his classes ranking in the top 10 more often. If we take a consensus of the different rankings we have a Nebraska that probably is borderline at best in terms of their roster or two-deep meeting the “blue-chip ratio.” Osborne himself seems to feel that while they did compete nationally they relied heavily on local kids or undervalued players.
