Edited because I said a mean thing.

So even the university can't confirm it?

Nope. Neither can Public Health.
Here's the important excerpt from the linked story:
Persons reported to the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) local staff last month that persons stated to other persons that they attended a party where COVID 19 positive persons were present. This information was reported ADPH Center for Emergency Preparedness (CEP) and to local authorities. ADPH cannot verify that a party or parties actually occurred, that persons were present at parties who had COVID 19, or that persons were violating home quarantine. At this time, no cases of COVID 19 have been epidemiologically linked to a party or parties.
ADPH told the City of Tuscaloosa about a rumor that was shared with them and for some reason the fire chief decided to announce it as verified fact.

My post from the other thread about it...
‘Covid Parties’ Are Not a Thing
No, Alabama frat boys aren’t doing snot shots and betting on who can get sick first. Why does the media keep suggesting otherwise?
‘Covid Parties’ Are Not a Thing
No, Alabama frat boys aren’t doing snot shots and betting on who can get sick first. Why does the media keep suggesting otherwise?
quote:
“They put money in a pot and they try to get Covid,” said City Council member Sonya McKinstry. “Whoever gets Covid first gets the pot. It makes no sense.”
quote:
The latest version of the tale, from Alabama, follows the same pattern as the others. It appears to be the product of a weird game of telephone mixed with loose talk from public officials and disgracefully sloppy journalism. On Tuesday, Tuscaloosa fire chief Randy Smith told the city council that his department had heard about parties “where students or kids would come in with known positives.” It sounded like just a rumor, Smith said, but “not only did the doctors’ offices help confirm it, but the state also confirmed they had the same information.”
quote:
You’ll notice immediately that Smith didn’t say anything about people trying to get sick, let alone betting on who could do it first. So why is everyone saying that’s what happened? The notion seems to have originated with McKinstry, who shared it with ABC News after the meeting.
quote:
The Alabama Department of Health responded with a statement that it “has not been able to verify such parties have taken place.” It’s not even clear that the fire chief had it right about kids going to parties while knowing they were sick. (The Tuscaloosa Fire Department did not reply to a request for comment, either.) But that didn’t stop the dogpile of national media outlets repeating and amplifying the Covid betting-pot story as if it were fact.

Seems like the media is taking stories from twitter or Facebook and running with them. That’s quality journalism

Not in this case. A Tuscaloosa city council member and the FIRE CHIEF took a story from Facebook/Twitter and told the media it was true. The media just reported what government officials stated as fact.
Now neither one of them will comment. If I were mayor the quality of the chief’s public apology would determine if he kept his job.

These stories, and I mean stories, are going to hurt our University!
After that story came out, everything about students starting school at Bama has been altered. My daughter is going to Bama and is Rushing, now they are doing Rush all virtual! Don't have any idea how that will work.
The move in dates, times, who can help, have been changed too.
My son is a junior and in the MBD has received news that the band might be changing move ins, practice, etc. He is waiting for the conformation email. I felt good about football returning when I knew the band was on schedule.
I am sorry for all theses students who are going to miss out on a lot of their college experience due to media panic.

Cecil Hurt had a column about the reporting on this BS.
Finescum pretty much asked every guest last week about the Alabama students having parties to spread the virus. He was having a real good time with it. Probably wont mention it this week.
