I’m going to be up there 2nd week in May on business, is it worth trying to bring the wife and stay the weekend?

There's a casino/hotel overlooking Oaklawn track.

The downtown area has the historic bath-house row and lots of organized crime history.

There are some cool trails with hot springs coming out of the ground. A handful of historic bars, decent food, etc.

It's also slightly ghetto, but honestly not too bad by deep south standards.

As Numberwang pointed out, there are enough sites to see to cover a weekend if you want to bring the family along. Hot Springs does have an interesting history and the area is quite pretty.

If you elect not to bring the wife there are also some very lackluster strip clubs you can be bored at while sipping over priced drinks.

Hot Springs was on a path to be what Las Vegas is today. Until Protestants got a hold on the government and started using the government to enforce their version of morality.

Such a shame. It is a beautiful area and some of the downtown architecture would be beautiful if they weren’t abandoned.

It is still salvageable, but needs two things.

1. The government needs to get out of the business of regulating the gambling and alcohol industry. Easier said then done with religious people controlling the government and lobbyists that protect existing gambling from competition.

2. It also needs a legitimate airport. Nobody is going to fly into LIT then drive or bus over an hour.

Check out the free water taps all over town.

Check out the PEB art on Oaklawn's walls

If you want to stay downtown try The Waters or Hotel Hale.

Superior Brewery brews their beer using the natural spring water.

The Ohio Club is cool place downtown. Rolandos, Porterhouse and The Vault are also good. Deluca's has excellent pizza.

Try Smokin in Style Barbecue. It’s 10 minutes from downtown but it’s really good. The other recommendations mentioned are spot on

Ohio Club is a cool old bar. I believe it's the oldest bar in the state.

It’s beautiful up here, I did check out The English Muffin since it is across the street from my hotel

Not bad, we go to a high end steak house tomorrow and then the casino

Been mostly drinking at the hotel with my new team the last few nights

I’m definitely coming back with the fam, really love this place

To me it’s like a mini quasi NOLA - but I love places that are both skeevy and quaint.

I honestly would move to Hot Springs Village and be one those oldies who go play shuffleboard or something and then take a van to the races and casino :)

I don’t think I’ve ever been to Hot Springs and not had fun. Maybe that’s why it’s like NOLA to me???

If you like baseball and history then I recommend
Hot Springs Baseball History Trail
it is where spring training actually began in the 1880's thru the 1940's and there were a lot of Negro League played games there as well.
There is a smartphone app that you can download and follow the trail with historic markers giving you details of the who, when and what.

I grew up in Central Arkansas

I've been to New York City, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Miami, Hotlanta, Montreal, Denver, Minneapolis, etc., etc., and I've never once in my life been to Hot Springs, Arkansas

I've always thought it was kinda seedy, but lots of people swear by it.
