As a result, NCAA staff are in preliminary talks with the State of Indiana and the city of Indianapolis to potentially host the 68-team tournament around the metropolitan area during the coordinated dates in March and April. Indianapolis was already slated to host the Men’s Final Four from April 3-5, 2021.
“My committee colleagues and I did not come lightly to the difficult decision to relocate the preliminary rounds of the 2021 tournament, as we understand the disappointment 13 communities will feel to miss out on being part of March Madness next year,” said Mitch Barnhart, chair of the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and University of Kentucky athletics director. “With the University of Kentucky slated to host first- and second-round games in March, this is something that directly impacts our school and community, so we certainly share in their regret. The committee and staff deeply appreciate the efforts of all the host institutions and conferences, and we look forward to bringing the tournament back to the impacted sites in future years.”

The committee emphasized the importance of conducting the championship in a manageable geographic area that limits travel and provides a safe and controlled environment with competition and practice venues, medical resources and lodging for teams and officials all within proximity of one another.
Indy and surrounding metro to host the NCAA Tournament

What happens if indiana shuts down?

This makes sense that you want to create a bubble to make sure you can get the games played.

Idc where they play it as long as it gets played and I can flip back and forth frantically on Thurs and Friday during the 1st round.
Could they run 2 courts at one time in Lucas Oil Stadium?

If Indiana shuts down, then chances are most locations across the country are shut down. They've been pretty light with mandates compared to others in the region.

That would be nuts.
In a good way.

If they play within the Metro you have Butler, Pacers arena, Lucas Oil, and IUPUI.

quote:Yep. Probably no fans other than player comps. If they are going to do it this way, they should probably consider rescheduling as well: have all the teams come to Indy immediately after the bracket is announced, but wait to play for 10 days or so, then play the first four rounds over seven or eight days (no travel needed, just a day off between games) before having the Final Four look more like normal.

Are there enough basketball courts to get this done in the normal time frame

It doesn't matter. This season is going in the shiter anyway. Doubt we'll even finish conference play. Ain't nobody traveling to covid friendly Indiana.

They're replacing 13 sites and only 8 (plus Dayton) host those early rounds.
Right off hand you have Lucas Oil, Butler, IUPUI, and Pacers just within Indy.
I believe University of Indianapolis also has a team and plays in a serviceable arena (assuming not many fans).
And that's not taking into consideration high schools and JCCs gyms you could use in those earlier rounds if you needed to.

It's really not.
Whether people like it or not, a vaccine likely won't be widely distributed in time to significantly reduce COVID-19 restriction in March.
If you host a tournament in multiple locations across the country, you risk the chance of one state shutting shite down while another doesn't. And with the planning that goes into the NCAA Tournament travel and lodging it makes the most sense to have it in one area that you can control.

This is so stupid
Why?
Whether you think all of this is an overreaction or not, this greatly improves the chances of not having more issues in the future
