When I was in college, I worked as the gate keeper at a hospital doctors parking lot. No gun, but at night I did have a flashlight.

What do you need to know?

I would not take a job doing armed security in the Middle East unless it was somewhere like Qatar or Dubai. Even then I'd be very cautious. You would not only be a wildly foreign country where the rules are radically different but you'd an American in a region where only the Israelis like the Americans (The Saudis and Gulf Arabs tolerate us at best).

If you want to get into security as a career choice see about getting hired by an armored car company. Yeah, your first couple of years will likely be something dull like counting money in an office but there are opportunities for advancement.

My Nephew works for Loomis and they fly him all over the country to work certain delivery routes for them. Free housing, per diem for his food, and he is (I shite you not) making a hundred grand a year.

Which kind of makes me feel like a doof for telling him to skip the whole armored car thing and get a college degree instead.

I would not be looking at doing any kind of work like that right now, man. The only thing I would consider is the French Foreign Legion. You can't be a pussy, though, and it will likely give you a ton of connections in Europe.

I worked with a PMC in a dusty place of the world (not the Middle East) and it's really, really shitty. If I could give younger me advice it would have been join the French Foreign Legion and go back and do more things like OPFOR/Training at the gun ranges that simulate combat and all that jazz.

It really fricking sucks when you're PMC/Pulling security, including Protective Services. It's hard, long and while every member has a lot of personal gear/equipment this isn't the Army or Marines.

If it goes bad, you are alone. No QRF, nothing.

Like I said: Don't be a pussy. Exercise. Lift as if someone's life depended on it. If you're considering it, join the French Foreign Legion -- just make sure you learn French.

If you don't have the dedication nor discipline to learn another language, stay home and just be an armed guard for an Armored Car Service or something similar but you're probably going to get rejected without prior service (police or military).

Yup. That is the catch. My nephew was an Army veteran when he applied to Loomis. They really prefer to send people with some training when it comes to firearms out on routes for obvious reasons.

If you want to get into that line of work and you haven't done a hitch in the military or police I would seriously suggest doing so. For one thing you might find military life agrees with you and make that your career. For another it will be a lot easier to get hired in high end security jobs when you get out. If nothing else when you get finished you might decide this whole get shot at by angry people thing sucks and you can use your GI Bill for college.

Listen to Straws on this one, him and I disagree with each other from time to time, but he is not BSing you. Make damn sure this is what you want to do before you do it and for God's sake don't put yourself in a position where your arse could be hanging in the breeze in some third world shithole.

I have prior training etc. Armored trucks would be a step down. I'm looking this for financial reasons. The money I could make in Dubai etc would be very nice. You just cant make that over here doing the same thing.

I'll check into FFL, thanks for the heads up. What do you think about oil tanker security in the Somali coast area?

I've heard that they're a little castrated and it largely depends on who you're working for. Maritime laws can be really weird, which is why most non-military ships seek out less-than-lethal measures. I could dig around a little more (most of my knowledge on this is chewing the fat with guys while on OPFOR).

If you are going to do security then, yes, Dubai would be the best choice in the Middle East. I would still be nervous about taking a job in that neck of the woods, particularly during this current health crisis. With no insult intended to Dubai they have nice but not particularly deep medical services. A foreign PMC would be fairly low on the treatment totem pole. If you can hold out for a few months until things settle down than Dubai might not be a bad place to wind up.

I'd be worried about doing tanker security, because, as Straws has pointed out, you don't have a ton of options available to you. That having been said it depends on the contract. If you can find a steak and blowjob contract... find out if the ship has a safe space (non Mizzou kind) in case y'all do get boarded where you can hole up and wait for the cavalry to come.

The problem with the Legion, right now, is that they have suspended recruitment. The pay is not wonderful, though the contacts you make would be. Its more of an investment in the future. If you have at least one Jewish grandparent the IDF is always hiring in Israel.

Lets see what Straws contacts turn on up on tanker security first. Best of luck to you buddy. My foreign military contacts are a lot like me... well past their sell by date. I can't really pass on current info to you.
