Just asking as opposed to the circle jerks among the haters that have seemingly inundated the forum since the BCSCG.

At the onset of the season, wasn't there a consensus here and among the media that this was a rebuilding year of sorts for BAMA? I can recall going into the Louisville game and others about how people ragged on their youth and depth, and how inexperienced the secondary was.

Started the year #1
Ended the year #2

Not a good trend. Underachieved bigly.

Compare that to a team like LSU:

Started the year #25
Ended the year #6

One is on tIncline, one is on tDecline.

Two new coordinators, an entirely new secondary, first time starting QB. They definitely didn't suck all things considered.

Where they started was based on prior season, and is out of their control. The fact they ended up #2 based on the premise of the initial post is impressive.

Yes. They lost their top 6 DBs from last year. Had new OC and DC along with like 5 new position coaches. Lost their best pass rusher in Terrell Lewis to injury in the preseason and their number#1 CB in Trevon Diggs in the first half of the season to injury.

They also had a 1st year starter at QB who was still an underclassmen.

The defense was thin on depth upfront and really inexperienced in the secondary. The linebackers definitely disappointed and regressed.

They will be back next year with a more mature and better team.

The secondary, which was what ended up costing us the game, was why people thought that. Lost all 6 starters to the NFL; just no way to replace that in one season.

The LB corps didn't have the playmakers of recent past. Lost a couple of great ones there. Same at DE.

The thought was that the offense would make up for the defense's shortcomings, and most of the season they did. The problem is once you had an offense that could score as well as Clemson did, all it took was one or two bad offensive series to practically end the game.

The two picks especially; that's a 14-28 point swing depending if you think Alabama would have scored on those two drives. Coupled with red zone woes, and the offense basically killed the defense. The D had at least enough stops at the beginning of the game to give the offense the chance to take the lead. Once that didn't happen, it was game over.
