If he already had a first round grade why couldn’t he decline position drills and just conduct interviews. Many players have done that at the combine. It’s not like he can guarantee an injury free season and his draft stock will be just as high next year.

Most of his value comes from his athleticism. Lets not kid ourselves: Derrick Brown is a very good DT, but he's also still hot/cold and prone to disappearing. He's the type of player that builds his stock by showing up to the Combine and showing that he's a freakish size/speed specimen which ultimately gives NFL scouts wet dreams. If he can't test at the Combine, or if he's going to test poorly because he's hurt, then that takes away his biggest selling point. He isn't a guaranteed 1st rounder off his play alone; its entirely possible that if he is indeed hurt that he drops to the 2nd or 3rd round. This is why it makes sense for him to just come back next season.
