Kirby Smart should be a lesson for all of us. We could have had him when Gus came but the same dumbasses that made this mess fricked that up. I sure as hell hope there is a Bruce Pearl equivalent available next year when we hire our new coach. Off course these morons will frick that up too.

Hindsite is 20/20. Kirby was the one Pat Dye wanted. We requested an interview, but Kirby had 2 stipulations we did not like. 1) Kirby wanted to coach Bama in the Nat Championship game and 2) Kirby wanted full access to the Cam investigation files.
While those may seem like reasonable requests from a head coach candidate, the general consensus was no AU coach will help Bama win a title, and we were VERY concerned Kirby was just wanting the investigation files to negative recruit against us (just like he always has).
Plus let's look at Saban's coaching tree.
Mark Dantonio - no thanks
Bobby Williams - no thanks
Jimbo Fisher - many like him, but I personally feel he is overrated (for now).
Will Muschamp - you decide
Derek Dooley - no thanks
Jim McElwain - no thanks
So while Kirby may seem like a no-brainer now, he certainly was not the clear choice in 2012.

The same ones that were bitching when we thought we were going to hire him are the same ones pointing and saying “see I told you we should’ve hired him”.
Some people just like to bitch.
The Kirby situation was tough. The coaching in the National Championship thing we could’ve and should’ve got over.
However, all the information he asked us to give was just too risky. I don’t know if I could’ve done that knowing he could’ve backed out at any time and use it against us.

You mean just like Pat Dye? UGA Alum. Bama Assistant coach...
Also looking at it from Kirby’s perspective, would you not want all that information before making a decision? I know I would.
It was just a tough situation for both sides
