Stetson Bennett Crisis, Week 9, the Reckoning

Here we sit 9-0. We have an elite defense and a really good offense. Our defense is fricking sexy. Our offense, is less sexy, but gets the job done.
We are lucky to have Stetson. Here is why…
1. “Stetson has limited throws because they know he is not very good.”
Stetson actually has more than TWICE the passing attempts in the First Half of the game vs the Second Half. Why? Because we are typically up by 3 or so scores by halftime. Our second half goals all season have been to burn clock and preserve the lead.
For context, 84 of his 120 passes have come in the 1st half.
2. “Stetson has a weak arm and is lucky he doesn't get picked off more”
Stetson doesn’t have the arm strength of JT, but he has good zip on balls he needs to have zip on. The almost interception on the out against Mizz was not a best choice, but his zip on that ball did keep it from being intercepted. He makes many come back/ curls/outs throws and they typically have good velocity on them. He definitely puts more arc on his longer throws, but he is pretty damn good with placement and those are very catchable balls from the standpoint of a receiver. With a few exceptions, he usually throws that type ball when the defense has our guy in man with his back turned. I would propose that those balls are easier to catch and harder to defend than lower arc balls when you have a guy trailing you in man coverage. You just can’t do that in an area where there is a safety in zone, which he really does not do.
At the end of the day, our defense and football philosophy take away some stat opportunities for him, but stats are not the goal here. If we are down by 2 TDs, maybe JT is the better answer. He is a better, pure, drop back passer. Yet, with our defense, grinding and play action with a few QB runs is a good recipe for victory with our Elite defense. The longer we grind and shorten the game, the less possessions the opposing teams have… and against a tough defense, that turns up the pressure on the opposing offense to make plays, which plays to our strengths.
Until someone stops us, we are going to be a run and play action offense. If those teams want to “stuff the box”, then that puts us in more Man situations off play action and Bennett does a good job with that part of the game.
If you think “anyone can play QB and win at UGA” I disagree. Bennett makes the passes necessary to move the offense and keep it balanced. Could JT do the same thing? Maybe. Be lacks mobility which affect some of the play action and rollout schemes, but he is an excellent passer and seems to read the field well. Both guys are not perfect, but both have great upsides.
Bennett has stayed in frankly because he has earned it. How do you just pull a QB who took you through a gauntlet of ranked SEC teams and won them all? Especially to pull him for a guy with a limited starting resume and one that has battled a lot of injuries? It is really difficult to name JT the clear incumbent based on his career at UGA to this point.
We have two good QBs with different skill sets, This is a good thing. If we get into a position to where we need to throw our way back from a 14 point deficit,I’m sure JT will be the one throwing. Until then, enjoy the ride and the heart of Stetson. Don’t be a count. The world has too many of them. We should be better.

You forgot how stet floats the deep ball.

No, he explained that quite eloquently.

Stet may not have Patrick Muhommes arm but his arm is stronger than David Greens was and several UGA qbs since.
He throws darts and has great velocity on 15 yard outs (the NFL throw), his long balls get caught which is better than overthrows.
He has skills beyond a game manager but that is all we need him to do.

Not quite sure, but that first throw to Burton was a lucky catch instead of a pick.

Most long balls are, JT way underthrew about every long ball last year and a whole bunch of 50\50s that JT admitted were 80/20s if thrown at pickens.
I will take the underthrow everytime, so long as the wr sells it, its usually either a catch or a pi.

It's a lot less hostile than if I had written it. You should read it.

Watch it again on youtube. It was under thrown a tad, but the DBs back was turned. THe DB got his head around really late. The arc of the ball caused him to not be able to see the ball. All the DB could do, was put an arm on Burton and the other in the air. The DB never tracked that ball or made a move to catch it. Burton did.

I lied.
I read his first point about pass attempts in the first half and thought that could be said for 2017, 2014, etc.. Every offense that is up on an opponent is going to do the same thing.
So i thought it would be cute to say i didnt read it (since he lost me on his first point).
He does come off as angry? Or am i wrong?

SBIV usually already has the victory dip in for the second half when other QB’s would still be putting up additional passing stats.

I bet if you read it at a convenient time, you will not have this opinion.

The first point is a counterpoint to what some of yall are saying is his weakness… lack of passing stats. It explains why his passing attempts are low… that is all. It is not unique to him per say, but I do not recall a team that was up by so much against every team on our schedule at half time. There is also no overt or implied anger, so not sure where you are getting that.

Hopefully not this weekend but on DEC 4th and the playoffs we're going to need more than a game manager for 4 quarters.

Stetson is one of the most mobile QBs UGA has had in recent memory. His QB runs keep opposing Ds honest and helps us get good yardage when receivers can’t get open. He may not have a cannon for an arm but he’s certainly adequate and better than a lot of overthrowing gunslingers we’ve had in the past.
We can win a NC with either/both QBs, but I’m glad we have Stetson and, as Nakobe Dean said recently, “he’s my quarterback and he works hard every day.”

Fair enough.
For the record, i said that a healthy stet could win the natty for us after the clemson game.
But i dont understand all of the posturing. Stetson is the QB. A healthy JT is better in my opinion.
The issue with stetson isnt arm strength. He is too slow. All of his poor throws (including the completions) were fired too late. That is why they allow the defender to make up for the separation earned by the receiver/OC.
Now the TD to Smith was on time and a dime. That is twice that Stetson has hit Arian in stride (JT never has. He has been late on throws, too).
But it is obvious to a lot of people who arent the best talent scouts that stetson doesnt excel in going through his reads. And he makes poor decisions at times when pressured (like a ton of QBs do. Which is why the defense's goal against any explosive offense is pressure).

I’m glad we have JT and Stetson.
By the end of the year, we’ll be able to say we couldn’t have done it without both.
