If that is true then why is he taking a chance on a Sunbelt guy?

If this is true then why did we end up with a guy who only worked at Troy his whole career?

There could be a myriad of reasons why. You think we know very little about recruiting inside info? We know exponentially less about the inner workings of coaching contracts (before being finalized) and hires.

What if there were budget constraints from having to pay the equivalent of a small country GDP to Gus Malzahn?

When we were filling out our staff, Kiesau was still in limbo at Boise State because they had not yet made a decision on a HC . He would have very likely been the WR coach from the start, but he's not taking a demotion to position coach before he's certain that he doesn't get retained as the OC at Boise State (I can't entirely remember, but he might have also been one of the more longshot candidates interviewed to outright replace Harsin as the HC). After they hired Avalos and he wasn't retained, he came here in an Analyst role - but by this point we had already hired Cornelius Williams.

Harsin likely took a "shot" at Williams because he does fit several marks that a lot of the rest of his staff don't: he's young, he's from Alabama and has connections in this state, he was seen as an up-and-coming recruiter, probably came with good recommendations from coaching circles in this area, etc. If you remember during the initial press about the staff hiring process, I believe that Williams' interview was deemed as one of the longest (if not the longest) - so I think that he was seen as a "project" from the start. He was likely hired on the basis that he would need to learn and adapt to a more demanding coaching style, and he was likely let go because he wasn't progressing on those fronts.

You guys are missing my point that Harsin just wasted over $600k on this hire. All I'm saying is demote the guy, give him some more training, or coaching. Since he had his old coach as an analyst this would have been easy to do and then tell the guy to find something at the end of the season. It was one of his guys who was in position to make the game winning catch.
