Was Florida obsessed with Petty before he passed away?

I don’t recall really hearing the Gainesville connection until he overdosed. Just wondering if he did anything with the university after he became famous

frick no, just trying to fake a tradition

Hell no
They’re just trying to build some kind of tradition.

I like how they mentioned that the claims that Petty was a groundskeeper were 'rumors'. He died four years ago, someone could have asked Petty.

Petty always spoke of his ties to his hometown.

He had a park here and was always considered Gainesville big star. Just because you douches didn’t hear about it doesn’t mean it isn’t real.

I'm confused as to why this was a story today

Yeah, I totally got that feeling while Gameday people were trying to sell that. ESPN has gotten amateurish as hell lately.

Traditions have to start somewhere, but I agree this one feels overly manufactured.

When you'd go to a house party in Gainesville people would often say it was Tom Petty's old house. Sure seemed like he had a lot of houses.

Fair enough. I've been to games in the Swamp quite in the time frame from 10-15 years ago and honestly, I don't recall them playing any Tom Petty songs. It's no big deal, doesn't mean he wasn't great but I think the OP is just positing that ESPN went out of their way to create a story that's really not a story.

He’s from Gainesville and has had a connection with the town throughout his career. 88K people joined together and sang “won’t back down” after this death in a cool tribute 4 years ago. It’s not our fault ESPN won’t stop talking about it

Why does it bother people that much on this board. Tom Petty has connections to the University, and his hometown is Gainesville. Who cares if they started a great tradition after he died. I don’t understand the hate. Then again, it seems like LSU fans doing the hating, and y’all do get worked up over the weirdest shite. Like a school calling themselves the University of Louisiana. Find something else to get upset about losers.

Petty himself couldn’t wait to get away from that area.

I guess it was more how ESPN presented it, as if it was a 20 year old tradition. The cooler story is as you said above, that they did a tribute to him after his death and the tradition stuck around.

I don't have a dog in this fight. I did see a UF fan post a video once of a Petty interview and he said he was from Gainesville and was a Gator fan. Since the man said he was a Gator, then he was one of them. It doesn't mean LSU has to stop paying his music.
