Pods likely leaves several teams pissed about loss of rivalries and leaves a few teams with pretty weak groupings of "permanent opponents". The 3 permanent, 6 rotating seems to be the best compromise option that still gets every team home and away over a 4 year period.

False. Pods with 3 perm opponents takes care of that.
