This applies only to conferences with divisions.

2020 Ohio State
Never forget the B1G tried to shame the SEC into torpedoing the 2020 college football season in the name of "player safety" and then broke their own rules to allow Ohio State to win the conference just to get a team in the playoff.
frick the B1G.

Last year, Oregon defeated USC to win the Pac-12 Championship, despite finishing second in the Pac-12 North to Washington. Washington had insufficient players to play the title game due to COVID-19, so the conference selected Oregon to represent the North against Pac-12 South champion USC. Oregon won 31-24.

I feel like Georgia Tech did something like this once.
Maybe it was that they got to play in their title game without winning their division because someone else got their season shut down for cheating or some such.

Wisconsin won the Big Ten in 2012 despite finishing third in their division.
Ohio State and Penn State we’re both ineligible.

Kentucky in 1961. Miss State won the regular season title but had to decline NCAA bid. Kentucky beat Vanderbilt in a one game playoff in Knoxville at Tennessee.

Wisconsin isn’t in the same division as penny state or OSU.

In 2012, Wisconsin shared the “Leaders” division with OSU and PSU

They were in 2012, when this occurred.

MIami did a self imposed post season ban or something and Tech played in the ACCCG in their place. No idea what year.

Alabama played in the 1993 SEC Championship Game because Auburn was ineligible, but didn't win the game against Florida.
2012 Wisconsin finished 4-4 in conference play, behind undefeated Ohio State and 6-2 Penn State, both ineligible from post season play. They ended up defeating Nebraska 70-31 to win the Big 10 championship.
If Ohio State had been eligible, presuming they also beat Nebraska, they would have played Notre Dame for the title. OSU, despite being 12-0, was hardly dominant - beating Michigan State (7-6), Cal (3-9), and Indiana (7-6) by single digits and into OT vs Purdue (6-7) and Wisconsin (8-6). They also had a 1 score win over a ranked Michigan team and had a difficult time putting away UAB (final score 29-15).
So it is likely that it would have made for a more competitive game than Alabama or Georgia vs Notre Dame, and the two best teams in college football would not have been playing for the national championship.

and Arkansas played in the 2002 SEC Championship Game because Alabama was inelgible, also losing. I think the OP is referring to last year, though. None of these schools on probation were awarded division titles. Last year Washington won their division. Oregon did not and still won the conference championship. It's really the only team that fits into the OP's criteria. Teams on probation aren't awarded division titles.

Fair, though the wiki page for the 2012 B1G season lists Ohio State as the winner of their division.
And confirmed - the OSU 2012 team was awarded the trophy for winning their division.

2020 Oregon.
I feel like this has something to do with the B12 South in 2010. OU officially won the division.
