NIL Player Auction?

Just wondering, could a recruit auction himself off to the fanbase that bought the most of his merchandise? Pick a five-star such as Quinn Ewers. He could sell hats of different colors matching four schools recruiting. Say he promised to attend the school whose colors sold the most.
Anything to stop fans of LSU, Ohio State, Bama, etc. buying up thousands of hats to get a 5-star QB on campus?

Why not just get a dealership to sponsor 5 stars? Easy

That is one approach, but think of the level of crowdfunding you could get as well.

Just curious: Have you read any NIL legislation that has passed?

I would think it would be interesting to have these players make it available to see exact funds, donations, taxes, etc. They also should receive punishment for not paying taxes, claiming, etc.

At this point, it's pretty much at the discretion of what your own state legislature has passed on NIL.

I could be wrong because there is so much out there about this, but I think NIL only applies to students who are already in the program.
In other words, I don't think they are supposed to use it to entice players to come to a school, only once they are already enrolled.
Here are Alabama's regs:

May a booster, fan or UA employee provide NIL-compensation to a prospective student-athlete ("PSA")?
No. Alabama law prevents the use of compensation for NIL as an inducement to attend or enroll in or continue attending a specific postsecondary institution.

How long until we see the first tax evasion case?

Yeah, judging how a lot of NFL players seem to manage their money, some sort of frickery is inevitable.

State or Federal?
Pretty sure Florida and Tennessee in the SEC aren't requiring NIL state income tax.

Probably depends on state/school, but I think the rules say that NIL deals cannot relate to recruiting.
