Cool fishing story. Lake Martin.

I'm down in Auburn right now and spent a couple of days at a friend's place on Lake Martin. Place is in the Manoy Creek area in Jacksons Gap. So I'd just gotten in the water from the stairs yesterday from the seawall, and a really nice bass boat approaches the pier, drops the trolling motor and moves to my side of the pier. We're 30-40ft from one another and exchange pleasantries. I stay on the steps and let them fish the pier (I grew up fishing, still fish and just wanted to watch).
My friend and his son usually tie 3-5 christmas trees each year under the pier. It also has a ledge that goes from 13ft to 30ft in front of the pier. Its a great pier for bass and crappie and possesses the right structure. Whether the anglers knew this beforehand I don't know, but it seemed they did.
What was awesome was watching one of these dudes cast. So he was throwing underhanded/sideways and skipping a jig to the far side of the pier from the opposite side, underneath the pier. In less than 5 minutes they'd landed a 1.5lb and a 2.5lb bass. My Dad used to fish tournaments, so I asked them, "Are you fishing a tourney?". Seemed obvious that they were. The fishing Roy Hobbs responded "...yeah, and boy did we need those last two fish. I think 12lbs will win it and we're now at 12.9lbs."
They made a few more casts, thanked me and moved on.

I fish with guys that can skip a jig like opening a door. I’m embarrassed to fish with them most times as I totally suck at it.

I know absolutely nothing about fishing. In laws got a house on lake martin and I figured I'd start now trying it out
1- What is the bare essential equipment I would need / what would you recommend for someone just testing it out? (Dock fishing + access to FIL bass boat)
2- Any youtube/instructional content worth checking out?
3- Lanier, recommend some goods I can buy from you so you can retire earlier
