Buzz growing on Mac Jones to San Francisco 49ers at No. 3 overall

quote:

The San Francisco 49ers made noise Friday afternoon when they traded from the No. 12 spot in the NFL Draft up to the No. 3 spot with the Miami Dolphins, who then moved down to the No. 6 pick in a package that involved picks from the Philadelphia Eagles. Some thought they were doing it for a quarterback, and they may very well be. However, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the 49ers plan to keep Jimmy Garoppolo.

Despite that, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the team draft a quarterback. And according to multiple people in the media, former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones could be the one the 49ers are targeting.

“49ers-Dolphins...Kyle Shanahan trying to control his own fate,” former NFL quarterback Chris Simms wrote in a tweet Friday afternoon. “You trade up to 3 for a QB who is NFL-ready right now, not a project. And to me that says Mac Jones.”

Three-Round 2021 NFL Mock Draft: 49ers take surprising QB at No. 3; Dolphins, Eagles add offensive playmakers

quote:

It's go time, y'all. The 49ers sell the farm to move up from No. 12 to No. 3 to take ... Mac Jones. It sounds crazy, and maybe it is, but we've heard since late last year that Jones could very well end up a top-10 pick and we're a month away from knowing for certain. He certainly fits Kyle Shanahan's system and if the 49ers love him, they'll land him here.

NBC Sports (Peter King)

quote:

It seems stunning to think Alabama’s Mac Jones could be the Niners’ choice—and “could be” is the operative phrase because the Niners have not decided who to choose at three. You can expect Lynch or coach Kyle Shanahan to say that today when they meet with the local press for the first time since January. But Jones is in the mix. Friend-of-Shanahan Chris Simms, an NBC Sports analyst, wasn’t predicting Jones would be the Niners’ guy when we talked Saturday, but he said: “Where Mac fits that offense perfectly is that Kyle will give him one or two clues about what the defense will do on a play, and the results will be top notch for Mac when he executes the play. He has Joe Burrow-type reading of the defense. Plus, other than Zach Wilson, Mac is the best bullseye-thrower in the draft.” If not Jones, my best guess is Trey Lance, athletic and strong-armed, would be the pick here.

Last point regarding the Niners, if they pick Mac Jones: There is a cadre of evaluators who do not think Jones is a great quarterback for 2021 football because he’s not mobile like a Lance or Wilson. Maybe those evaluators are wrong. We’ll find out soon enough. But if San Francisco picks Jones, the upshot will be stark. For a team to spend three first-round picks on Mac Jones will be the story to watch out of the 2021 draft.

Fact or Fiction: Mac Jones will go No. 3 overall in the NFL Draft.

quote:

FARRELL'S TAKE: FACT

This is my guess as the San Francisco 49ers made their big trade with the Miami Dolphins to move up to No. 3 before Justin Fields' Pro Day. Why move up before you get to see Fields again? We know Trevor Lawrence is going No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Zach Wilson is going No. 2 to the New York Jets. So my assumption is that Mac Jones will be pick No. 3 unless it’s Trey Lance.

Kyle Shanahan will ruin him then the Falcons will probably draft Justin Fields to keep the Utes of the fanbase happy.

If he ends up at the 49ers, he could be better set up for success than potentially Tua and Burrow just because of what's around him. Depends on those draft and offseason moves by the Bengals and Dolphins though.

Not saying Mac is better than either, just that he might have the better supporting cast at San Fran at least for now.

I would be surprised to see him THAT high. He's good, potentially great, but #3? That seems a bit crazy.

Before this trade Jones was projected at 15 to the Pats. Now, San Fran gave a 12th pick, and future picks as part of their trade to move up to get a qb, obviously. But they still could've likely had Jones at 12. So this trade deosn't make sense for Jones, unless they think somebody else wants Jones ahead of 12. The deal seems like a lot to pay for Jones, therefore I think they want Trey Lance, who will not be available at 12.

Funny. What does Christina Simms know about good quarterbacking?

I believe at this stage Mac Jones is more developed and ready to play than Lance, remember Mac sat back to understand the nuances of becoming a good QB,Lance didn't have that luxury

I just learned that tommorrow both Bama and tOSU are having a kind of pro day. Anyway, Fields will be throwing Columbus and Jones will be throwing in T-Town. SF head coach and GM will be in T-Town, not Columbus. So I could be wrong. It may be Jones afterall.

I will admit, I am late to the Mac Jones party but I think he has a very good chance to be the best QB drafted in this draft.... as long as he doesn't go to the Jets.

I was impressed as the year went on last year and I will also admit to being little jaded after what he did to my Tigers in Death Valley last year but the more I have read about him, I am very impressed. Good luck to the young man.

I’ve read lots of that stuff today and yesterday... I don’t know why they would have traded up to get Mac when he would have probably been available at 12...??? Unless they really believe the Panthers wanted him at 8.

Where there is smoke there is fire.

Btw to those who don’t know Chris Simms is one of Kyle Shanahan’s best friends. He’s got inside info.

Lastly, Shanahan’s best success was with Matt Ryan. Mac is compared to Matty Ice more than anyone else.
