If you are over the age of say 45 and watched WTBS you grew up watching NWA Jim Crockett Promotions. His family also ran Mid Atlantic Wrestling based out of Charlotte. He convinced Ric Flair to move to Charlotte and become the greatest ever. Sold out to Ted Turner in 1988.
The Braves and wrestling carried WTBS for its first 20 years.

The dude with the tennis racket?

Wrestling was so strange before the WWF took over.

There would be no Ric Flair without Jim Crockett, and for that I will forever be grateful for Jim Crockett.

WWF “taking over” turned wrestling into a sideshow for an extended period of time. They basically created a bunch of comic book characters. There was a literal Clown and his sidekick midget holding championship belts. They take a stab at imitating comic book characters from time to time. I hate it.

Pro wrestling was a different beast back then. Crockett Jr. ran two and a half states (North Carolina, South Carolina, and part of Virginia... with the rare trip to West Virginia or very Eastern edge of Tennessee) and was doing so well that most nights his promotion was running three shows.

He had an office staff of like 5 or 6 people and was running a multi-million dollar a year business.

A nice guy but he got talked into trying to compete nationally with the WWF and that ruined his business.

I thought Georgia Championship Wrestling (NWA) was tied in with Florida Championship Wrestling and Paul Anderson was the President/promoter?

I do remember seeing Crokett on there a lot as a mgs. with his obligatory tennis racket.

You guys are confusing Jim Crockett with Jim Cornette.

Here is Cornette:

Mid South Wrestling was tough to beat. Jim Ross could be the best announcer of all time imo

I don't remember Jim.

Gordon Solie was the one we always got on our broadcasts.

Here with the great Dusty Rhodes.

I haven't kept up with it in a long time, but I saw a special one time that featured him in it, with some in depth interviews. He's been involved with the business on and off for a while. Retired now, I think.
