Steele made his money with the average teams in the SEC. Against the better teams, AU had to lean on the Offense to win. Steele was overrated , even among Auburn circles.

That has more to do with the current nature of college football. Great offense beats great defense these days.

The offense is why Gus was hired.

As I recall Kevin did alright against Bama and Georgia in 2017 and Bama again in 2019 and I still recall that 3-1-7 hybrid look that Steele broke out against LSU in BR in 2019. Burrows was struggling with his keys all night. Obviously, LSU had even less success with Kevin's defense this season. He has a distinct imagination against spread attacks and keeps it simple enough to communicate and execute. No easy feat, I was impressed anyway.

Who doesn't have more trouble with elite offenses than bad->good ones ? Everyone does. Saban's best defenses, including 2011 and 2016, had trouble with almost all great passing offenses. They just didn't play many in the SEC until the last 5 years or so.

Steele was a good DC, though probably a tad overrated. He benefitted greatly from Muschamp's effect. Like everyone else though, he was dependent upon his personnel.

Mason is probably a good hire, but it is frankly unknown now. The world is completely different than when he was last a DC; but it's not like he was out of college football, he was a HC in the SEC. He's certainly worth a try.

I recall Steele saving Gus' arse many times with his defense as Gus' jerked around with the offense & sputtered. It's the O's job to score enough points to win. Gus & his myriad of OC's failed many times while Steele laid down the hammer on defense and helped Auburn squeak out a W.

I hear that. I will say that Steele came up with a brilliant plan against LSU last year and we damn near won the ballgame because of it. Even with a true frosh QB on the road. I think he's a good culture and scheme guy. Players love playing for him, but I don't think he is as good at recruiting or player development and he could have been.
