In 1978, defending champ Notre Dame lost to Mizzou 3-0 in their opener.

I am not sure you are correct on Maryland losing the following season. In 1952 the National Champion was declared before the game. And Maryland lost in the Orange Bowl that playing year.
The following season 1954, they opened winning against Kentucky at Stoll Field.

Still not accurate. I can't remember who it was but the broadcast mentioned it was someone in the 1970s.
