You think folks in Phenix City can't earn enough to live in Columbus? Citizens of Lanett can't find enough scratch to live in West Point? Heflin residents are just dreaming of the day they can movie to Bowdon or Tallapoosa?

Millie Jane in Eufala has been saving up her pennies for years in hopes of eventually moving across the river to Georgetown!

A definite YES on this one!

Haven't been to Lanett in a couple of years but that place is in rough shape...looks like it still hasn't recoverd from whenever they had their heyday.Im assuming
it was when the textile plants closed.

Agree on the bigger point though.

No, like underachievers the world over they will stay where they are and come up with all kinds of excuses why their problems are the result of someone else's actions...

Funny Valley has been brought into the mix. My family is from Valley and the surrounding environs....my grandfather was arrested twice in a one year period for moonshining in the 1940s and the second time was facing either 10 years in the chain gang or moving out of the state. He chose the latter, moved 60 miles to the north and east of the Valley, and that branch of the family has grown and thrived while the bunch left in the Valley all went from being lint heads (I can call them that being a progeny of lint heads) to severe unemployment and poverty to being saved by the Koreans from KIA with $12 an hour jobs.

Meanwhile my bootlegging grandfather got a union job with US steel in Atlanta, owned 2 nightclubs, a used car lot and an auto auction. More to the point he raised 2 kids who were the first in the family to receive a high school diploma. One of those kids, my Aunt, raised two sons, one who became and electrical engineer and is a Southern Company executive, the other is a tenured professor at Oglethorpe University, and my father who made a good living as a union electrician, retired at 62 with an income that is about 75% of what he made working his entire life, who raised 3 kids, one a CPA who owns her own firm, Another who owns a small business with about 30 employees and a third who is an electrical engineer who works for himself and has done so all over the world. Meanwhile our family in the Valley are lucky to have KIA and are happy to sell their lives to their employer as they have since we were sharecropping in the valley. Our grandfathers getting arrested for bootlegging saved several generations from living in a mill town and all that that implies...meanwhile folks in Lanette and Shawmut and Hughely are still praying for a job at KIA....or worse.
