Remember this. That was the first year of the BCS so there were lots of eyes on all the games.
Championship Saturday started with
1 Florida State (not playing, ACC Champ)
2 UCLA (playing USC)
3 Kansas State (playing A&M)
4 Tennessee (playing State)
5 Ohio State (not playing, Big 10 Champ)
UCLA was upset by USC and A&M stormed back and won in overtime against KState. In a span of about an hour, Tennessee went from playing for a spot in the Sugar Bowl to the national championship game. I really think State was able to take advantage because Tennessee played tight. State had a good defense that year and gave them fits until the end.
They even interviewed Tresell in the third quarter because Ohio State has a chance to jump in if State won.
It was actually one of the best days of football in the past 25 years.

That would be a no. They lost at Miami in a game that was rescheduled from September due to a Hurricane.

Actually...it started like this:
1. Tennessee
2. Kansas State
3. UCLA
4. Florida State
5. Ohio State

When the season wound down, Tennessee had been #1 in the AP for weeks, but I'd forgotten that KSU was #1 in the coaches poll. I don't remember the BCS standings. I guess I don't remember it being that close.
Tbh, I thought it was a fluke that Arkansas lost to MSU and didn't watch the SECCG until many years later. Didn't watch the Arkansas/MSU game because it wasn't on television. But that was a very good MSU team and it should have finished ranked. It's interesting that MSU won the West and beat Arkansas, but was never ranked higher, although I'm sure that early loss to Okie State had much to do with that.

A&M played four top 5 ranked teams that year, including FSU, and Ohio State was the toughest opponent. UT lucked out not having to play them.

I guess you mean John Cooper.
