The vast majority of medical break throughs in the world happen in the US where there is still a reason to research. Go look at cancer survival rates between the US and countries like France, Great Britain and Canada you may be shocked. I don't want to compare the system we have now to single payer because what we have is broken, it was designed by Democrats to be broken so they could ram single payer down our throats. Every bit of Obama era regulation needs to be stripped, open up the ability to buy insurance across state lines, and have up front pricing in hospitals made them compete for your money. You'll see cost drop.

open up the ability to buy insurance across state lines,

That doesnt solve anything. It doesnt hurt (other than muddying state bureaucracies).

and have up front pricing in hospitals

This is one of the biggest problems with healthcare. Price discrimination based upon the insurance plan (or lack thereof). It boggles my mind how so many regulated industries have price controls but hospitals will overcharge 1 plan so they can under charge 2 others.

made them compete for your money

That is one important part of a free economic system that is lacking today.
There are problems unique to healthcare which make the entire system a challenge (pricing experience and prior success into the system which is highly regulated).

Only if HSA's become the norm, the law. As long as someone else is paying for it, people don't GAF about the cost.

Universal HSA's
+
Transparent pricing across all levels of healthcare
=
Lower cost through competition, ending defensive medicine and BS treatments, more consideration of what is necessary vs precautionary vs total BS, and ownership of your own care.

Poor and destitute groups can keep medicare and medicaid. The VA can keep the VA.

Everyone else goes to a mandated HSA plan.
