Well, considering Auburn was national title-level good in 2010 and 2013 (National Championship and National Championship runner-up, respectively), the obvious answer is 1972. Still 10-1, but getting obliterated by LSU meant that Auburn was still outside the top 5.
Even so, none were "bad" or even "mediocre" Auburn teams. All 3 games were winnable before the kick off for Auburn.

Auburn got obliterated by LSU in 2013 as well, just saying.
