William Justin Beam, 29, is in the Marshall County Jail with bail set at $20,000, records show. Beam is indicted on charges of sexual contact with a student and second-degree sexual abuse, a Marshall County prosecutor told AL.com. The case was investigated by Boaz police.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Bray told AL.com the victim, a student at Boaz Middle, was 12 when the sexual contact happened in October.

Beam teaches math and coaches boys basketball teams, according to the school website.

Boaz City Schools Superintendent Shannon Stanley wasn't immediately available for comment to AL.com. School officials told AL.com news partner WHNT News-19 that Beam has been suspended since March 9.

Assistant police Chief Rusty Rowan told AL.com that's the day the department was notified about the allegations. A student at a different school told a counselor that her friend at Boaz was dealing with some things involving a teacher, according to authorities.

The school counselor told police and the Department of Human Resources, Bray said.

A grand jury issued the indictments on Thursday after determining prosecutors have enough evidence to formally charge Beam and send the case to trial. Rowan said Beam turned himself in at the police department Friday morning.

Gross.
But in al fairness, he hasn’t been found guilty.
That said, at the very least he ought to be suspended until a trial verdict is handed down.

How exactly did you find this out? Did you recognize his name or face from when the original story broke?

why? is "innocent until proven guilty" not a thing anymore?

being accused of something should never cost anyone the right to earn a living or work

having said that, if he is guilty, hang him

Hence the suspension.
If you are charged for this heinous of a crime, suspension is typical protocol.

If you are found innocent, no big deal, go back to work and collect back pay.

So what you're saying is he took a deal that required him to quit teaching and then became an SEC umpire?

Yeah that sounds far from innocent.

It would certainly be shame if this guy who lost his job for groping a 12 year old could no longer umpire college baseball games.
