I'm starting this thread in order to talk about our football personnel, and I wanted to start by asking about Ronald Williams Jr. Does anyone have more specific info on him above and beyond his recruiting profile? Reading between the lines of Saban's comments, Williams Jr seems, to me anyway, to be the key to putting a proper Nickel package on the field versus USC and GA in September.

I suppose that the answer could also be Armour-Davis, but I'm not sure. If anyone could enlighten me/us further specific to the secondary, it would be much appreciated. I believe that I can see how most position groups will look in Spring, but I'm fascinated at how our secondary/Nickel/Dime packages are going to look, and I can't figure it out quite yet. Thanks in advance.

Good question - I have to assume they think and expect him to play, as we aren't going to sign JuCo kids who don't fit that mold.

I think you're right that a good nickel package will depend on Williams, but not because he'll be expected to play nickelback.

He's an outside corner, so he'll have to be able to do that well enough to start in the base defense. I won't be surprised if Surtain is nickel back, with Williams and Jobe on the outside when we go to the nickel look

I believe either Shaft or Bo have more information on him.

Yes, I fully expect Surtain to play Nickel.

Who else do you think has a real shot at one of the corner spots?

And while we're talking secondary, who would you put your money on to start at the 2 Safety spots and Dime Safety? I want to believe 1 Safety will be Daniel Wright.

Jobe will more than likely be one of the corners. I think Daniel Wright will have a safety spot. I hope that the young guy, Story, can get some playing time

Battle might have the other Safety spot

Thank you, yes. This is the name that has been eluding me. Kid looked promising last year.

EDIT: I believe we do Left and Right Safety, do we not?

BamaBo7, knows the family pretty well. I mention it because he spoke very high of the young man when he committed. Sounds like he will be a good fit.

Williams, Jobe, and Surtain as your 2 corners and nickel gives us so much length and size. I’m actually excited about our secondary, think they will better with a pass rush that should help them out a ton.

Jobe has talent, but I’ve always thought he would be a better safety. I don’t know shite though

Yes, I would be shocked if Battle is not one of the safeties

As for corner , I can see Williams, Jobe and Surtain mix and matched but going to have to see more of JAD in spring to see where he is at

I have to believe that JAD, Banks, and Turnage see this Spring as their shot to supplant somebody at corner. Anyone have a feel for them?

JAD was going to play some role as a true freshman. Saban supposedly really liked him, and then his knee blew out. He played this past season, but I don’t believe he was fully recovered

I think it's a valid thought long term. From what we've seen from Jobe so far, seems his talents are his physicality, but can let receivers get behind him.

Not sure how often, if at all, Bama uses the trail method over boundary/field CBs, but that shouldn't be a huge thing if he's put in a position to succeed.

The trio of Surtain, Jobe, and Williams certainly wouldn't have any dropoff on size at CB.

Pre-spring personnel discussion: DBs

I planned on shifting the conversation to defensive line in the not-too-distant future, as we've seemingly recruited well at the position they last several cycles, but haven't found the production. I have to believe a few of those guys are going to have big years this year.
