Just came up a little short.
Huge moral victory.

I know you're being sarcastic 808.
But this was a big step in the right direction.
Super banged up and our young stars outside of Torrence Watson showed up and played well under the circumstances.

For real this time though. Played much better. Couple bad turnovers and we shot 20 less free throws.

It is a step in the right direction in that we actually look like we’re playing basketball and not tiddlywinks.
It’s still an L. And when LSU decided they were going to take over the game, they had the horses to do it. We’re three players away from competing on a night in and night out basis. And no one is coming.

I’m with 808 on this one. Moral victories are dumb.
Just another tally in the L column.

Cute how you were quiet during the game though...Officiating was really terrible. In contrast Michigan State and IL were actually allowed to play in the BIG. 34 to 13 FT attempts.

Does everyone else expect a turnover when Watson dribbles or attempts a pass? Really disappointing sophomore season for him.

Moral victories can be dumb, but can also be telling with young teams. You can take it how you want.

I was quiet because I didn’t start watching until 13 minutes or so left in the game when a friend texted me we were up.

It was a loss. period. Could not hold on to a late lead, period.
That said, saw some positives that have not been there all year.
Pickett and Pinson stayed under control for the entire game, almost. Both chose their times to attack better than earlier games.
Nikko continues to improve. The fact that he became a functional player over the last season and this season has impressed me. Actually having an impact as he has over the last 3 games or so is shocking me.
Glad Jackson finally learned how to play defense, or whatever he was lacking in Cuonzo's mind. He has natural offensive instincts the rest of this team simply does not have. He has athletic ability that stands out on this team. He needs to be on the floor.
Watson's regression is real. Don't understand it. This team needed a Watson that continued his upward trend from the second half of last season. The opposite happened.
Refs were sad against both teams, favored LSU. Officiating is one of the things making college basketball much less enjoyable than it used to be.
LSU's floor needs something done to it. Lucky one of the players on either team did not end up seriously hurt.

A loss is a loss, and I have watched every game this season and will continue to be a huge fan/supporter, but we have a real problem..
Martin needs guys to transfer. You can only do so much skill work with a player before you chalk it up as they don't fit my system or they peaked. Watson can't dribble or pass- with below average defense. His shot is not good enough to make up for the lack of the rest of his game. Akongo is just a wasted scholarship.
Now as for Mitchell Smith, Parker Braun they try and care and can be good spot minute guys. Love the work ethic they bring but that is as much as should be asked of them with some occasional scoring from Mitchell Smith.
Kobe, Pinson, Jackson, pickett, Mark Smith, Dru Smith, and Tilmon are guys that fit Martins system and have athletic ability. You can't win without everyone fitting your system or having superior athletic ability to make up for you not being the perfect fit. These guys can win- 3 of them are currently hurt, two of them are taken off the court as soon as they make a mistake and the other works his butt off always.
Martin is very close to getting a team that can win a lot of games, but he's missed on too many guys not being his fit and then doesn't seem to want to play the pure athletes coach them through the mistakes. He sits players to fast and doesn't give enough learn time. Martin to me has seemed to start seeing the team trend in the right direction with these athletes playing major minutes and learning on the fly. If we have tilmon and mark smith back and giving watson the boot for mark, and taking some minutes from mitchell smith and Nikko- (who has been great btw) and put in tilmon and I believe this team is headed the right way. But the trick is martin needs watson, akongo, and possibly braun to leave and chalk it up as goodluck next place you go we just aren't the right fit for each other and see if we can get better athletes guys that can actually move well and teach your system as you go.. (cough cough like tray jackson, kobe brown, pinson)

I’ve changed my mind on Braun. I think he can be a solid contributor by his junior year. That’s fine.

He just needs to bulk up a bit.

A healthy Tilmon with Nikko playing this well would have done wonders. Unfortunately never had both at the same time

I'll say it again, your team isn't going to be very good if Mitchell Smith is getting 25 minutes. Our talent level is simply not there. If I were putting together a tourney team (not a championship team), there is probably 1 or 2 players on this team that would see the floor.
As much as I agree with the positive things said about Nikko, he wouldn't be on a tourney caliber team.

I could go on and on but the bottom line is that we don't have the talent. Period. And we don't play cohesive team basketball to make up for the lack of talent. All of that falls on Martin's shoulders.

They played good team basketball against LSU. Auburn will be another story, because they [play great defense and hit the heck out of the boards.

I’d say they actually played a very good team game vs LSU but you are correct in that they usually don’t. Far from it in fact, and yeah, the talent is lacking. That’s why we get these huge foul disadvantages vs the athletic teams.

Nikko the way he has played the last few games fits in just fine on any team

Not true, if you watched that game the foul discrepancies were not athletically based. BS
