It was posted in regional papers out west. Not a whole lot. He wasnt even regarded as anything until he published a football almanac in the 60s.



Also another note about the '41 title. It wasnt even awarded to Bama in 1941. It mysteriously changed in the 60s with his almanac

I have zero interest in defending this title, but an interesting note is that the clipping you have is from December 2nd, prior to the bowl games. Alabama ended up beating Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, who was ranked 17th in that poll. Minnesota did not play in a bowl game that year.

That's about the only reason I could see it changing, presuming Houlgate took those into account.

Alabama played a tougher schedule, but that's irrelevant considering the two losses.
