I will admit that yours and djs' reasoning sounds plausible, but I don't think Spurrier made that up out of thin air. Had to be some articles written or something similar in order for him to go there. He had a much more prickly personality back in the day. And I think he was a little sensitive about his recruiting or lack thereof.
As much as everyone likes to call Mullen a lazy recruiter, Spurrier wrote the book on lazy recruiting.

He's not lazy. He's just weird. Offputting to normal people. Probably scares the hell out of some kids and their folks with his gooberness.

I don't recall when the quote was from. Frankly, I thought it was from his time at South Carolina (along with the one about playing us early in the season and suspensions)... If it was from his time at UF, one would imagine if it had any validity to it at all, it would have been during the Donnan tenure, as he actually did manage to land a fair amount of talent (that ultimately set Richt up for earlier success).
