Nah... that's not really a very high number. In fact, since the creation of the BCS in 1998, this season's game between LSU and Clemson rated #15 out of 22 in terms of television ratings.

The sad truth is that America cares more when a major program from outside the Deep South is involved.... it's no coincidence that the Top 5 most watched games all involved either Ohio State or Texas.

MOST VIEWERS FOR A NATIONAL TITLE GAME (1998-2019):

1. 2005 Texas vs. USC- 35.630 million
2. 2014 Ohio State vs. Oregon- 34.148 million
3. 2009 Alabama vs. Texas- 30.776 million
4. 2002 Ohio St. vs. Miami- 29.104 million
5. 2006 Florida vs. Ohio St.- 28.795 million
6. 2017 Alabama vs. Georgia- 28.443 million
7. 2010 Auburn vs. Oregon- 27.316 million
8. 2000 Oklahoma vs. Florida St.- 27.240 million
9. 1999 Florida St. vs. Virginia Tech- 26.962 million
10. 2008 Florida vs. Oklahoma- 26.767 million
11. 2012 Alabama vs. Notre Dame- 26.380 million
12. 2013 Florida St. vs. Auburn- 26.205 million
13. 2015 Alabama vs. Clemson- 26.182 million
14. 1998 Tennessee vs. Florida St.- 26.112 million
15. 2019 LSU vs. Clemson- 25.590 million
16. 2018 Clemson vs. Alabama- 25.280 million
17. 2016 Clemson vs. Alabama- 25.266 million
18. 2011 Alabama vs. LSU- 24.214 million
19. 2003 LSU vs. Oklahoma- 23.937 million
20. 2007 LSU vs. Ohio St.- 23.069 million
21. 2001 Miami vs. Nebraska- 21.559 million
22. 2004 USC vs. Oklahoma- 21.419 million

I think you can make a strong case that LSU is the worst television draw for a National Title Game.

All four Championship games in which its been involved in have been among the 8 lowest rated in terms of viewership.... and they even brought down ratings-juggernaut Ohio State back in 2007.

Ohio State's title games are ranked #2, #4, #5.... and then all the way back at #20 when they played LSU.

add in the Pac 10/12 teams.

Having a West coast team makes a substantial difference.

Average rating for a National Title Game, per school since 1998:

1. Texas (2)- 33.203 million
2. Oregon (2)- 30.730 million
3. Ohio State (4)- 28.779 million
4. USC (2)- 28.525 million
5. Georgia (1)- 28.443 million
6. Florida (2)- 27.781 million
7. Virginia Tech (1)- 26.962 million
8. Auburn (2)- 26.761 million
9. Alabama (6)- 26.649 million
10. Florida State (4)- 26.630 million
11. Tennessee (1)- 26.112 million
12. Clemson (4)- 25.332 million
13. Miami (2)- 26.332 million
14. Oklahoma (4)- 24.841 million
15. LSU (4)- 24.203 million
16. Nebraska (1)- 21.559 million

Again.... no coincidence that the four teams who seem to bring in the most viewers are all outside the Deep South. SEC Country is all going to tune in no matter who is playing. But Texas and the rest of the country tunes in with far higher concentration only when a major team from outside the SEC is involved.

Georgia and Florida have the most potential in the SEC due the large television markets in those states. Atlanta is the #1 college football viewing market by a longshot in terms of total viewers.... so Georgia playing in the game in 2017 helped bring in some viewers that might not have tuned in otherwise. With Orlando, Miami, Tampa, and Jacksonville all inside the state of Florida, the Gators also have huge viewership potential.

The Birmingham market is by far the #1 CFB market in terms of concentration.... routinely trippling the next closest market in terms of ratings. However, the Birmingham market tunes in for EVERY big game whether one of their teams is involved or not, so Bama doesn't bring in the viewership numbers one would think.
