In practical application, it doesn't end up working out like that. Most states with no state income tax end up offsetting that with things like toll roads (of which there are a lot in Texas), and higher fees on things like car tags, property taxes, real estate purchases, etc.

Yep, the cost of living in the Athens area is definitely much lower compared to progressive College Station.

State taxes are deductible from federal taxable income so he'll pay more federal.
