Expanding the playoff is worth giving up a garbage game against FCS directional state.

You're basically trading a blowout during the Regular Season for a blowout during the 1st Round of the Playoffs

Only difference is that more eyeballs will be on the 1st rnd playoff blowout

Go to a 6 Team Playoff, with top 2 seeds getting Byes

Take the 4 Conf Champs from the 4 strongest Confs as Auto Qualifiers, then take the next 2 at-large Qualifiers based on final composite Rankings with a weight towards W-L record vs the best SoS

Just because the 4 Strongest Conference Champs are Auto Qualifiers doesn't guarantee them a Top4 Seed, for example ND or a 1-loss team that didn't make their Conf-CG could have a better SoS and get a higher seed than a Conf Champ theoretically

I put this caveat in to encourage P5 Programs to toughen up their Sked rather than water down their Sked to try and make the playoffs, this will create a huge incentive to get rid of scheduling FCS opponents

The 1st round would be #3vs#6 and #4vs#5, with the top 2 seeds on a bye waiting to play the winners with the top seed getting the lowest surviving seed

Simply manage the 21 day layoff after the Conf-CG and the 16 day layoff before the CFP Title Game and you won't have to make any significant changes to the P5 CFB Calenders

Easy peasy, but whatever you do do not guarantee all Conf Champs a playoff slot, there has to be an incentive to upgrade scheduling and protect the value of the Reg Season, guaranteeing playoff slots will make P5 Teams schedule more cupcakes and ruin the Regular Season

Or just go to an 8 team playoff. Have the power 5 conference championships be automatic bids and top four seeds get home field advantage in the first round. Keeps the conference title games important and gives three at large teams to get in

Far be it from me to agree with the Tech grad, but this is what I've been preaching for a while. 5 conference auto-qualifier will mean very lackluster playoff games and also ensure that at some point, some team that really doesn't belong ends up in a title game. The reason CFB has been so interesting for so long is how much regular season games mean. Expanding to 8 pretty much ensures that a good team with a bad loss doesn't care anymore, and really doesn't even have to do much to get their SOS high enough to "edge out" some of the other contenders.

If we're expanding at all, 6 is the only realistic number that still ensures reasonably high quality playoff matches with "mostly" deserving teams... and even that is likely grabbing 2 teams that were "close but not quite at that level" 9 out of 10 years. But it does at least reward the consensus #1 and #2 teams with a bye, so still pushes teams to win every game and schedule accordingly.
