What if Ole Miss, Arkansas and Tennessee.......

were to return to the times when they were national powers?
In the 1950's to the early 1970's, Ole Miss was a program you didn't want to mess with. Arkansas had great teams in the '60's and '70's and, of course, Tennessee was experiencing great heights during the 1990's.
If all three would somehow make it back to the national stage like they had been, how would it affect the current power-status quo in the SEC as it is today? Would the SEC be able to have 8 traditional powers and still be in the hunt for the national title every year without cannibalizing itself to death?
Will the Rebels, Hogs and Vols ever make it back?

Somebody got to fall off for them to rise up. Look at the top of the sec now, Alabama, Georgia, lsu, Auburn, and Florida all have better recruiting grounds, resources, and are on a higher trajectory. They might come back, but it dont look to be soon

quote:No. Vols could, but they need to make a good hire here soon. I think they are at a point where it needs to happen very soon, or they'll be relegated down to lower SEC permanently with the rest of the lil 8.

If those schools return to prominence, then other schools will drop down a notch or two and fill in their place.

Arkansas is the only team with potential in this since NWA is thriving. The powers be in LR have been meddling and you see the result.
Knoxville is not what it once was and with Memphis going its own way, that has hurt Ole Miss and that latest loss to them will only hurt more

No for Ole Miss. Integration hasn't been kind to them.
No for Arkansas. This ain't a one team conference like the SWC.
Tenner eventually will, if they can ever get a good HC again.

Agreed, even with HDN we went to two, or was it 3 SEC C games, then Petrino, we were ranked 3rd and 5th in the nation.
We keep having the bumbling idiots in power hire mediocrity or worse. Sucks. But look out for Basketball and Baseball continuity. Basketball will be a force in the near future.. Our Women's soccer is rocking as well. At least we have that to look forward too

A lot more has to happen than them just making a good hire. Clemson, UT, and Alabama need to fall off. UT doesn’t have a recruiting base anymore, and they aren’t going into Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina and stealing away recruits. Plus their facilities are lower tier in conference. They’ve got a lot of work to do.

UT has some of the better athletic facilities in the conference.

If it were 1996, you’d be correct.

What if Georgia was as good as they thought they were and had won something worth mentioning since 1980?

The SEC cannot support 8 traditional powers. Ole Miss' faltering as a program along with Georgia Tech's exit from the SEC opened the door for Auburn to step up and become a more consistent power in the league. It also was not soon there after that Florida went from bottom dweller to upper echelon.
Part of the reason Ole Miss is not what they used to be is simply there not being room for them along with Auburn and Florida which were not powerhouses in the 1940s and 1950s when Ole Miss was at its peak. Auburn did come on the scene in the mid-1950s and won a National Title in 1957, but that was the first time they had been relavent since about the 1910s.

The SEC, as are most things, is cyclical. It may take decades for teams to return to the top, but it is sure to happen.
So take heart, Rebs, Hogs, and Vols! One day you’ll join The Tide at the top, where we sit in perpetuity.

Yeah we should be a legitimate threat to win the West once every five years or so, regardless of where other programs stand. There will always be programs on the up and on the down.
Unfortunately we've been on the down for too long. I tend to place blame on forcing the Malzahn situation, HDN not swallowing his pride in regards to the Malzahn situation, and then Jeff Long. Too many adults acting like kids.

2018 and 2019’s facilities rankings by 247 had VOLS 5th and 8th in the country.
Drebin is posting something hilariously dumb re: VOLS per usual
quote:
There's a reason new head coach Jeremy Pruitt said Tennessee had some of the nicest facilities he'd ever seen during his opening press conference. The Anderson Training Center is a state-of-the-art facility that spans 145,000 square feet, but that's only the tip of the iceberg in Knoxville. By 2021, Tennessee's two-phase, $340 million renovation to Neyland Stadium will be complete and the Vols should push No. 1 in this ranking.

You are not going to have 6-7 elite teams at the same time in the same conference, it’s just impossible. Someone rising will affect others,
Deepest I can recall the SEC ever being was 2006, Florida won it all, AU and LSU went 11-2 and were as good as anyone... neither won the West, Arkansas did and won 10 straight at one point. A few other SEC teams were a step below but still fairly solid.
Right now the top looks good but you have 5-6 teams that look pretty bad.

In order for Tennessee to be good they need to recruit Georgia. They use to be able to cherry pick anyone they wanted from Georgia, but that’s not happening near as much any more. Still, UT has talent. They shouldn’t be as bad as they are.
