(original title of thread: "agree/disagree re: Bama, and why?")

Shula was lucky to go 10-2, and 7-6 the next year was about right.

Saban was unlucky to go 7-6, and 10-2 will sound about right for him soon.

Look for Bama to improve, but I think 10-2 might be a stretch for the 2008 season but its definitely not out of the question.

soon (as in a few years), yes. But to go 10-2 in 2008 he would have to be just as fortunate as Shula. I dont think Saban was unlucky to go 7-6 last year, I think that was about right. We were unlucky in a few games, but we were lucky in a few games as well. I also dont think it was necessarily 'luck' that got Shula to 10-2. I think it was his outstanding D-Coordinator and some outstanding senior defensive talent. Those two factors plus a few good bounces along the way and UA was able to overcome the pitiful offense that Shula engineered. Too bad it wasnt enough during the two big games at the end of the year

This one will get some opinions...

Shula was VERY lucky to go 10-2. If you remember that year, Bama's schedule was a big part of them starting 10-0. They had a big win against UF, BUT it was in t-town and it was Meyer's first away game in the SEC. The gators were simply unprepared. Bama beat UT by one of the luckiest fluke plays you will ever see. Also in t-town. Honestly going into the LSU game I thought LSU would beat Bama very badly and I thought AU would do the same. I said MANY times at that point that Bama was maybe the worst 10-0 SEC team in 25-30 years. The only game I give Bama credit for is the LSU game. I thought LSU was a lot better and Bama played a good game - of course it was a home game for Bama too. Then AU kicked the hell out of them and the game was over at half time and Tubbs sat on the lead in the 2nd.

So, basically I think that 10 win season was very, very weak. As far as Shula, I do not think he was a very good coach, but I am not convinced he was that bad either. He saw Bama through rough times and severe sanctions.

In a nutshell, I think Saban is overrated as a coach and cannot win without supperior talent. I do think he is a great recruiter, but if he doesn't win more this year - like at least 8 - he will lose some of his success and momentum in recruiting. On the flip side if Bama has a big year this year, Saban will get another very talented top ranked class. I think Saban is the right man for the job at Bama as he is rebuilding and has the gumps excited. We will see if it lasts.

I wouldn't look for 10-2 real soon.

Based on their schedule, I think 8-4 (5-3) would be an excellent (regular) season for the Tide.

If they exceed this, then Saban will have done a helluva job.

Like an earlier poster said, I think the main reason Shula went 10-2 is the defensive talent we had. As far as going 10-2, I'm not looking for that this year at all. I think most logical Bama fans acknowledge that an 8 win season would be a good year, considering we're on the road to the elite teams in the conference this year. I believe 9 would be a total surprise and greatly unexpected. My opinion anyhow.

I would say 8-4. Clemson might put it on 'em right out the gate. I'm just not sold on J.P. Wilson at this point to predict a 10-2 season.

Hard for me to agree that 10-2 will ever sound "about right" for a coach who has only posted a record that good once in 12 years as a college head coach.

Disagree.

He was handed the Arkie game on a horrendous call by the officials and injuries to McFadden and Jones on Arkie's crucial last drive to try to run out the clock with a 4-point lead. He barely escaped against Houston, Ole Miss and Colorado, too. He was, frankly, just as lucky not to lose at least two of those games as he was unlucky to lose any game all year.

His losses were all pretty close, but in most of them, his team was outplayed and only managed to stay close because of large inequities in penalties and/or turnovers, especially the LSU game. About the only ones you could validly argue he was unlucky to lose were Mississippi State and ULM.

Sabear has won 10 or more games 2 times in 12 College seasons. He's won 99 games & lost 48. It's not like winning 10 games is a normal or even realistic future goal for him.

My favorite come from Tiger n Miami....

First off, coaching gets a lot easier when you have superior talent. Last I checked that's part of college coaching, recruiting superior talent.
