But when Smart is posed a hypothetical—What would have happened if Fields had stayed? How would he have handled Fromm versus Fields: Round 2?

Still think this team had a higher ceiling with Fields at QB. In my mind, it's the same situation Dabo faced with Kelly Bryant and Trevor Lawrence. Obviously, the variables are different for our team compared to Clemson but after last year's LSU game we should've given the ball to Fields just to see what we could be with him.

We knew Fromm could beat all the less talented teams on our schedule but who knows what would've happened had we given the ball to Justin and he could've faced Alabama being "the man" for us after having nearly a full season under his belt.

I guess we'll see what Fields does this year but I've been consistent with my opinion that you can't win a natty in the modern era without an x-factor under center.

Don't get me wrong, I love Fromm but I think that little extra spice we need sometimes is a guy who can make something out of nothing. We don't have that with Fromm despite how good he can be sometimes.

The back-up quarterback is always the most popular guy on the team with the fans because "what if". Of course, the "what actually happens" is why the guy is the back-up.

Alabama won NCs with Jake Coker, Greg McElroy, and A J McCarron as QB. Not much X factor for any of those.
