ESPN

quote:

Stewart is in agreement on a six-year contract worth more than $7 million with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN. Stewart was the No. 8 overall pick in last year's MLB draft but didn't sign after the Atlanta Braves, who believed he was injured, offered him a signing bonus well under the $4.98 million slot value of the pick -- around $2 million. Stewart went to junior college instead and was expected to go early in the second round of this year's draft -- and receive an offer of less than $2 million.

I can understand going to Japan to make some money, but for 6 years? Good luck to the young man, but maybe Mississippi State was the better option after getting low balled by the Braves.

It’s pretty smart. He will make more money and hit MLB free agency sooner than he would have if he went via the draft

Wow, smart move. Guarantee of 7 mil. Who's to say he would have ever made it out of the minors? 6 years only makes him 25 when his contract is up.

That’s a tad more than a million a year and he gets to bang hot Japanese women. How the frick is Starkville a better option?

Boras doing work and he's got his test case now.
Atlanta Braves low balled him due to injury concerns, he went to JUCO to stay draft eligible rather than State. Struck out over 100 in 70 plus innings. Was projected as 2nd round pick for 19 draft. This deal gets him much more money than he would have got reentering draft.
If it works out for him, you may see others try and do it.
Could net him a big free agent deal once Japan deal is up when he will only be 25.
Only question I have is what young kid like that wants to go live in Japan out of high school.
I would be a little weery as Japan tends to make those guys throw a lot.

Imagine that MSU staff with Small, Ginn and this guy.
That's my main concern with MSU - that third starter.

I would see more American kids get opportunities to play pro ball in other countries so they aren't forced to go to college because it is their only option. This includes all sports if there is a market for it.

- Braves lowballed him
- they got a compensation pick for not signing him

They'll be fine.
