How long was his initial contract? Is this just 1 extra year and a slight salary bump?

Isn't it Mississippi that has some kind of rule about state employees and contracts no longer than 4 years? Would guess this has more to do with that if I'm recalling the limits there correctly. Having a head coach with less than 3 years guaranteed in the future is not typically going to help out with recruiting.

State law limits contracts to 4 years. Most head coaches get an extension and it's basically a rolling 4 year contract. Andy Kennedy is the last HC not to get an extension and was soon gone. It's not a good sign when they don't roll it but it typically need that 4th year not to impede recruiting. Regardless how anyone feels about him, he needs 4 years to give him his (and our) best chance for success. I'm fine with it. If it doesn't work out, it's on the Bulldog Club to buy him out.
