Jaylon McKenzie, a standout all-purpose back East Saint Louis, Illinois, was shot and killed at a party in Venice Saturday night, according to KDSK. The 13-year-old’s mother told the station that McKenzie had walked outside to avoid a fight when he was hit by a stray bullet.
He was recently featured in Sports Illustrated.
Mizzou had already offered. Sad stuff.

Sad story man. I pull for anyone that has a way of pulling themselves out of a shitty situation. If the story is true and he was trying to avoid trouble, it makes it all the sadder.

The actual city of East St. Louis isn't what most would think when you hear ESL (and some areas are decent) . Now Venice, Brooklyn, and Washington Park are exactly what people think of.
I had a job during summers of undergrad doing environmental inspections and a great deal were at housing projects all over there.

If the community can't rally around this kid and make some positive change, then there isn't really hope anywhere. We're done.
ETA: It was one of like 20 shootings that happened in a 31 hour timeframe in the metro area. It's beyond getting out of hand.

There is nothing that a slack jawed civilian can say in reference to my military service that would be considered offensive.
Try again.

There are a host of people doing things in the STL community to help kids, mostly through athletics. The question is how do they reach the kids that aren't in sports and have no interest in school?
In the end, the answer lies in their parents. A majority are more interested in being their kids friend. That doesn't work.

Well if they don't want to learn what are you going to do? They will just be slack jawed civilians.
But this is mizzou board and not political board so no real suggestions here other than we obviously need a change of culture.

Yeah, call me crazy but I feel much safer in East St. Louis than North St. Louis.
