Big risers in the updated Top247 for 2021

quote:

Name: Hunter Sallis

New Ranking: No. 6

Old Ranking: No. 25

College interest: Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Oregon, Creighton, Indiana, Gonzaga, Louisville, Alabama, UCLA, Auburn, Michigan, Iowa State

When it comes to the five-star range, no one made a bigger jump than did Sallis. The native of Nebraska has had a huge rise over the last 12 months, and he took things to an even higher level this summer during some showcase opportunities.

Sallis has an impressive combination of size, skill and athleticism, and the scary part is, he doesn't even seem to realize just how good he is. Once Sallis takes the next step to becoming an alpha on the court, things will go to an ever higher level.

Currently, Sallis plays on or off the ball. While he needs to continue to get stronger, that will clearly come in time with natural physical growth and maturity. Once that added strength does come, Sallis should be one of the most difficult players in the country to defend one-on-one, and in a game that is clearly leaning to dynamic guards who can score and make plays with the dribble, there is a good chance that Sallis can find a way to crack the top five before it is all said and done.

quote:

Name: Jonas Aidoo

Old Ranking: Not Ranked

New Ranking: No. 89

Colleges Involved: Clemson, Providence, Houston, Virginia Tech, Miami, Alabama, Pittsburgh

In a class short on legit bigs, Aidoo is someone who emerged and proved worthy of high-major offers and interest this summer. He is a legit 6-foot-10 with athleticism, length and a solid skill set. While he needs to continue to be a more consistent rebounder, he is capable and at times he looks tremendous at the glass. With Aidoo, the rebounding is a function of going to the glass every possession. When he does that, he becomes a more complete big man.

With his size and length on the court, Aidoo has some ability to protect the rim, shows some pick and pop potential, and then also can run the floor very well. With his game just now rounding into form, it appears that some growth could be left for him to go even higher. For now, being a four-star was needed, and Aidoo is someone who college coaches are beginning to really zero in on when it comes to his recruitment.

Ole Miss, that is correct, is the leader for the top class in the SEC. There is plenty of work to be done by practically all league members and that includes Kentucky, which will not sit idle in its five-star hunt much longer. Tennessee may have missed on Paolo Banchero but it is about to make a major move in the coming weeks thanks to its strong positioning for Ryan Mutombo and Jahmai Mashack.

Florida remains the favorite of Alex Fudge and has continued to make a push for Carter Whitt. LSU is always going to be LSU and thanks to the early work it invested with JD Davison and Jabari Smith, the Tigers are on the prowl though continued allegations against Will Wade and potential NCAA penalties may give prospects pause before signing with the Tigers.

Don’t discount Alabama, which could actually finish with the league’s top class by the time next spring arrives due to their pursuit of Davison, Fudge, Michael James, Caleb Houstan and Charles Bediako.

1. What big-name recruit could pull off a big surprise with his commitment?

McDonald: I’ll go with JD Davison here because I really have no idea which direction he might go. Alabama and Auburn are fighting like crazy to keep him home and I have received information that would lead me to favor each school. LSU is also seen is a serious player in his recruitment. Given that he’s one of the top point guards in the class, I also wouldn’t be surprised if he entertained the G League option if it comes up. He’s very unpredictable at this point.

It’s no secret that Montverde has produced some of the game’s top up and coming high school prospects in the entire country. The most recent star to blossom under Kevin Boyle is none other than Top-10 prospect Caleb Houstan. The former member of the 2022 class announced his decision to reclassify up into the 2021 class and drew interest from nearly 20+ high-major college programs.

The list varies anywhere from Duke to North Carolina all the way to Gonzaga and Alabama. Houstan will have his choice and could go to pretty much any school that he wants. Now, the answer to this question, who are the leaders for Houstan and where could I see a fit?

Unfortunately, these two questions might not correspond with each other. As far as leaders go, in no order, I see Duke, North Carolina, Alabama, and Gonzaga as some of the current leaders for him despite his recruitment pretty much being wide-open.

Fit wise I think Houstan would be a special talent to plug into any of these programs. Being 6-foot-8 and having tons of control on the floor, Houstan has such a unique skill set. You look at the four programs I listed and you could pretty much insert him into any system.

I think ties could also play a factor in this. Alabama has landed Joshua Primo and Keon Ambrose, both from Canada, and like Houstan both of them played for the UPLAY AAU program. Bryan Hodgson has been very influential in this recruitment. North Carolina enrolled Houstan’s high school teammate Day’Ron Sharpe, Duke landed RJ Barrett, fellow Canadian and alumni of the same high school Houstan attend.

It will be an interesting race.

Kendall Campbell hadn’t played yet this summer, but that didn’t stop him from having a terrific showing at the Battle For Georgia on Sunday as he took home MVP honors after helping TSF Mack win the 16-under championship against the top teams in Georgia.

Shortly after the championship game, the offers started rolling in. Ole Miss offered within an hour of the last game ended. Alabama came right behind them and Georgia Tech did the same on Wednesday afternoon. Florida and Georgia have also shown heavy interest in the Class of 2022 forward who transferred from Meadowcreek High School to Milton High School.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Alabama: “They said they loved the way I worked and my motor and intensity. They liked that I could do more than just score. I’ve actually been there for team camp and their facilities are top-notch as well. I don’t know too much about Coach (Nate) Oats yet.”

Florida: “They contacted me after the games on Sunday and really liked what they saw. They said they would watch some more film and they would contact me. They said they’ll keep in touch.”

Georgia: “Coach (Tom) Crean and Coach (Chad) Dollar send me stuff a lot. I’ve heard Coach Crean is really energetic and loves what he does. I feel like Coach Dollar is somebody I can connect with. With Georgia being right here and being a school on the rise, I feel like ‘Ant Man’ [Anthony Edwards] paved the way for more top guys to go there. They could do something special.”

Georgia Tech: “Coach (Julian) Swartz and I have been in contact for about a year now. I went to their Power Hour workouts last summer to get a taste of D-1 practice and to show them what I could do. I think they have a great coaching staff. Coach (Josh) Pastner has a lot of passion and intensity. They are great guys overall. The academics are definitely a big draw because it’s a big deal in my family. You have to have a plan when the ball stops bouncing. The degree and the chance to get to the League from there is huge.”

Ole Miss: “That was one that meant a little more to my family because I was actually born in Mississippi. We’re down that way a lot. That was a special one. I have a special connection with Ole Miss because both my parents went there. I don’t know a ton about the coaching staff, but I do know the campus and the town and everything else.”

RIVALS REACTION

Considering Campbell is a 6-foot-7 forward with legitimate guard skills along with the toughness, athleticism and strength to play on the block, expect his list to continue to grow. Add in a strong academic background (Columbia was one of his first offers) and his recruitment could span coast to coast before long. The idea of staying close to home intrigues him and there is an obvious pull he mentioned with Ole Miss, but definitely expect for academics and player development to play a big role in his decision when the time comes. He’s in no rush right now to make a commitment.

I think we are like the clear Frontrunner for Cardet. He has a chance to be a 5* by the end of this in my personal opinion. I love his game

Been obvious for a while now, but we are officially no longer recruiting Deebo Coleman.

New York State’s top-ranked player in 2022 goes by the name of Roddy Gayle Jr. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard is one of the best scorers in his class and has a very unique skill set that has college coaches very intrigued at such an early time in the recruiting process.

When watching Gayle Jr. the first thing that stood out to me was his jump-shot and his smooth offensive game. In this day and age, basketball is all about shooting. You see players now more focused on the three-ball then ever before and that’s something that Gayle Jr. isn’t going to struggle with.

His recruitment involves several programs, since June 15th, he’s heard from nearly 20+ programs which included daily phone calls and several programs jumping into the mix. Now, as Gayle Jr. enters his junior season we could possibly see more movement in his recruitment.

Gayle Jr. says ‘The schools involved include Syracuse, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, UConn, Alabama, Marquette, and Georgetown’

“The newest program involved is St. John’s,” he says.

Over the past two weeks, he’s completed three zoom calls which include ones with Marquette, UConn, and Ohio State. These are three schools that have placed themselves high on Gayle Jr’s offer sheet. They’ve been in heavy contact since the contact period opened up this past summer.

“The schools are pitching the same thing. They want me to be effective as soon as possible and help them get over the hump and take them to a championship. I hear a lot about player development and becoming the player I want to be and reaching my max potential, I care about that.”

As far as his recruitment goes, it seems as if these programs that are involved could be the main ones in the mix and maybe a list cut comes at some point.
