Considering swapping over to a flight to Tahoe, but a bit concerned about the drive over the Sierra Nevada in early January. Random TripAdvisor posts aren't making me feel much better. Anyone got experience in that area? Terrible idea?

Obviously all "if we win".

I've never driven it, but if nobody answers I can ask someone who makes the trip often.

But the reason he makes that trip is to go snow skiing so...I'd probably just fly into the bay. Those mountain roads are scary as hell even without snow.

I really hope someone has some experience with that area. I think it would be a cool drive if they are good about maintaining the roads.

It sounds like the drive is fine as long as it isnt actively snowing. But it actively snows a lot and sometimes without warning.

I've done it in the spring. They will have it clear unless there is a monster storm which of course is possible.

You do NOT want to be going through there on a Sunday, as everyone piles on a two lane road trying to get back to Sacramento or San Fran after skiing that weekend. If you make that mistake you will sit in traffic for hours.

I have also taken the train that runs just north of Tahoe through Truckee. If you want to have a good time, and see some beautiful areas of the West take the train.

You will not have to worry about anything. They have a cabin for food and drinks, and another cabin made of glass for watching the country roll by.

You can stop in Sacramento and get a car.

It will take a lot longer, but I enjoyed the train ride over the car trip through.

Why are you going through there ?

Thatd be great, probably too logistically challenging with the short time frame though.

National title game IF we win. Currently flying into LAX and driving to the Bay then flying back Tuesday from Sacramento (like $800 cheaper for the 2 of us, worth driving 6 hrs). However, was considering doing Tahoe instead if the drive was feasible.

We are getting a lot of snow this year.

That road out of Tahoe is really small. If you go that route youre gonna be stressed about the weather unless you plan to go through with a day or two to spare.

Sacramento is a nice town. They have a lot to do, and some very nice restaurants.

I have. I've skied at Mt. Rose during Christmas break. The roads are OK. I'm assuming you mean flying into Reno? I-80 should be just fine.

I had an in-law that lived in the Bay Area for several years and then moved to Reno, and he always said the same thing. Traffic back to the Bay Area on Sundays is hell.

Again, are you flying into Reno or the little airport at Lake Tahoe? If Reno, there's no need to go near the lake unless you just want to. The interstate from Reno should be just fine.

You could also think about LAX. I found a flight on Southwest from Nashville, RT for under $300. Gonna drive up Highway 1 to Monterey. That's where I'm staying.

Where are you staying? We're flying out to LAX Friday morning early and coming back Tuesday afternoon.

If you've never seen Tahoe, it's worth seeing, but like you said, the logistics in such a brief trip may prove impractical.

It's not very much fun leaving Las Vegas heading west on a Sunday either.

I use to live in Sacramento; have made this drive many times. I have, on occasion, driven over Donner's Pass in winter without any issues at all. Other times have been turned back because the highway was closed.

The highway department is well prepared for winter, but driving conditions are always uncertain because of the "unpredictability factor." It's not possible to know NOW what the weather will be THEN. Even when there are storms/snow you could still 1) navigate safely over the mountains in a "light" storm; 2) be required to have chains; 3) be stopped due to road closure. I have experienced all three.

Ah man, make a day of it and drive up the 101. So many cool little towns along the way. And if you cut north after Santa Barbara into that national forest(forget hwy number, 150 I think) it's even prettier.
