Were your coaches kind men? Been seeing alot of attacks on Urban Meyer for being an a-hole, which I dont think anyone is arguing against. However, in my experience, i have never played for a coach or seen one that could not be considered an a-hole. At least while theyre on the job. When theyre off the field they tend to morph back into normal humans, but on the field, most of them are RUTHLESS.

My WR coach was awesome. Head coach and OC were total dick bags who cared more about winning than the players.

Never trusted kind and gentle head coaches. Pretty much need to be ruthless drill sergeants, IMO.

I played at a Christian college and the coaches were the biggest a holes I’ve ever seen.

I coach high school football and kids today are soft. When I played my coach would grab my by the face mask and cuss me out for what ever reason and I just manned up and went after it the next play.
If I do that to one of my players my arse is fired. most of our kids get all in their feelings when you get on to them for messing up or what ever.
But, a huge trend at least in my area, is that many of the players dont know their dad's and are being raised my their mother and the difference between a kid raised by their mom and one raised my their Dad or both parents is huge.

If it's high level competitive football, this is fine. The coaches' job is to win games. They get fired if they don't win enough.

Meyer is being attacked because he is a fricking weasel who hides behind some nonexistent bullshite medical crap he claims to have to keep his complete lack of integrity from being attacked.
The fact you had Hugh Freeze as a coach should clue you in.

Football is an aggressive and violent game. Give me a coach who’ll grab your face mask and cuss your a** out. Gus got a flag for saying “Bull crap!” while arguing a call. Wimpy.

People hate Meyer because he's a dick off the field, not because he may be a dick on the field or at practice. He's smug prick, always has been.
Difference between he and Saban is I do believe Saban cares about his players and is nothing but class when speaking about an opponent. Saban gets irritated and can be an a-hole when the media asks him questions he doesn't like, sure, but he doesn't have the level of arrogance just oozing from every word he says like Meyer always has.

my linebacker coach was also def coord. He was the nicest men I have ever known. But before and during practice if you made a good play he would head butt you without wearing any head protection until he bled.

They were just men. Coaching, like any other profession where you get power over people, attracts its fair share of assholes, but most of mine were just interesting in teaching us to play football and making sure we behaved well off the field (especially in terms of grades.) They were disciplinarians, of course, but anyone who has ever known or been a teenage male knows that you're not going Dead Poets Society them into being disciplined. You tell them what's expected, how it's expected, and what the consequences will be if you screw it up. Teenage males, especially those in sports, are easier to guide that way. The coaches were never unnecessarily cruel and we in turn accepted their orders as being important to the overall plan.

My OL coach was a ruthless and sadistic bastard who had humiliated me on several occasions for making mistakes.
That being said to this day if he called me up and said he really needed my help I would jump in my car and ask him to send me the address. Only man I respect more is my dad.

Actually, my coach was one of the best, most genuine Christian men I have ever met in my life. His name was Nick Hyder, and among other schools coach at Valdosta high when it was a major team in the state and Country. he won a couple of National Championships and tons of state titles.
Died of a heart attack at Valdosta High School.

Off the field they were mostly fairly cool
During practice tho they would all be in jail if they coached today. I will say this I was way better conditioned than kids with more talent back then but really am surprised none of us died.

My team was decent. I wasn’t much better. They let me play with a broke arm in the 10th grade. But in general they were tough but not dicks.

They were similar to Meyer, as is every good coach. The players who buy into the team first mentality are treated well and the ones with the me first mentality are not treated as well. There is obviously a longer leash with those who have the most talent, as with any endeavor.

Have you even seen one Saban press conference?

There is always the one coach that will talk to you to build you back up after the dick lickers tear you down. My coaches cussed us to death, were facemask grabbers/shakers, head smackers etc...but knew their shite and we were winners.

My head coach at Cy Fair High School was Warren Trahan. Played for A&M all SWC and then for the Dallas Cowboys. Family was from Louisiana. He was a nice guy, always in a great mood even when something was going wrong. He was awesome.
Offensive line coach was a guy named Ed Pustejovsky. He is now the head coach. H played at A&M also. He was kind of a moody. Cy Fair is doing great in football and has been under him. Seen him do a few interviews and he seems the same. Not a guy you want to get stuck sitting next to a dinner party.
