Now I understand the fake punt: UGA successfully ran the same fake punt in '12 v. Bama

UGA ran a fake punt, with Bama in their "punt safe" defense, and it netted about a 15 yard gain.
No doubt about it now, this is where Kirby got the idea and what he envisioned happening last night.
I guess it would have come across as ballsy, had it worked.

Except that was the normal upback in 2012. If Georgia had run Aaron Murray on the field I'm guessing we react a bit differently.
Our defense had been drilled all week to watch for #1 coming in (on offense). They knew to look for him. Him running in was like a 5 fire alarm going off.
It was just a bad call. There are no two ways around it. If you want to run him out there and then see how we react and call TO, fine. But when it's clear were playing literal defense and see Fields, you gotta call timeout.

The whole problem with the playcall is that we ran Justin Fields out there and hoped Bama wouldn't notice. If that's what you're hanging your hat on on 4th and 11 from the 50 yard line with the game tied late in the 4th quarter, you need to come up with a better excuse than "we just didn't snap the ball quick enough" and maybe even own the fact that it was a poor decision.

Exactly. Having Fields out there was dumb.

But that was also a different coach and none of those players are there.

Baltimore ran a fake punt today, punter through a beautiful spiral for a first down. At Mercedes Benz.
Meanies.
Meanies.

Well, Kirby was the DC in that game, so maybe he did remember it.

Yea, claiming it was wide open and the players just fricked it up was not Kirby's best moment.

Honestly, the only thing that pissed me off about last night was that playcall and that comment. Everything else was... well, quite frankly it was enjoyable to watch. I didn't think we were going to do anything close to what we did last night so the whole performance was gravy to me. But of course there had to be something to stick in my craw and a piss poor coaching decision late in the game and yet another sign of his now patented stubborness is what did it. I'm not even upset about Hurts coming back and beating us. I AM upset that we gave him 40 less yards to work for and then can't have the balls to admit it was a needlessly risky decision that failed in a big way afterward.

Worst coaching decision of the last 50 years. You punt them deep, hold them, get the ball in FG range. That is trying to win the game

Yea, I mean if he just says "Look, we wanted to win the game, it didnt work, that's on me. We thought had a play and it didnt work" people are still frustrated with it because it was dumb, but you can understood why at least.
To act like it was a no brainer and was going to work if not for your dumb players messing it up is just......it's a moment I'm guessing he wishes he had back. He's a young coach and got caught up in his emotions.

No doubt it's a play where you're a hero or a zero.
I can't recall what Sabans comments were about the I'll tried fake punt against Texas in 09.
But, in that case, it was very early in the game, first possession, perhaps. So it wasn't such a massively critical decision. It was a poor decision and still ranks #2 of Sabans dumbest play decisions at Bama.
(#1 being not kicking the FG against Auburn in '13 from the 13 yard line, up 7, with 5 minutes to go in the game)

If I remember correctly that was a botched read call by Fitzgerald or the upback. It wasn't a called fake punt.
But I could be remembering it wrong.

He said after the game that they had decided before the game to run a fake punt regardless of the situation.

If he said that he is not a good HC at this point and is winning with assistant coaches and talent. Terrible call.

That happened in the 2nd qtr of a 0-0 game. Last night’s was at midfield, tie game and 3:00 left.

I believe he said the punter called it when he saw Kirkpatrick left open.

quote:awful generous. I thought he shite his pants. I can't believe anybody would make that call. Hell, even in Madden 19 online cheezers are punting there or at least running a shotgun play for the starting QB- not a trick play!

Is Brenton Cox the other #1 usually in that spot? Because I like the idea of sneaking Fields in there if Cox is usually in that spot.
