Tie games

In light of the LSU/aTm game, would it make more sense to just have a tie, outside of a playoff game? Once you get past one or two overtimes, the teams are evenly matched and it pretty much comes down to luck.

every OT should start 10 yards further back

That would be a horrible idea

I agree.
At least just have an NFL type OT with a set amount of time, and each team having a chance with the ball - and the possibility of still ending up in a tie.

I think you should have to get at least 1-2 first downs to get into scoring range. Start at the 40 or even midfield IMHO.
And stats in OT shouldn't count towards "stats" overall, much like stats on point after tries don't.

What if nobody is scoring? Eventually one team wins with a safety?

Somebody is eventually going to get a 1st down and kick a FG.

Not a bad solution

or even 5 yards. and go back and put a cap on the 50 yard line. This would mean after a few OT's it would come down to FG's

Watching that game, I did wonder how much more likely it was that players would get hurt. Playing that long seems like a recipe for injuries.
I think there should be cap to the number of tries. At that point, just call it a tie. I mean Hell, if you did not win in the first six OT--- it was probably an even match, right?
I agree that it should be separate stats category as well.

Yea I agree - after like 5 OTs the sideline reporter was saying it was clear everybody on both benches was totally exhausted. I mean I'm all for tough football, but the chance of injury skyrockets in those types of situations.
I hate ties as much as everyone else, but at some point you have to figure out a way to stop a game from continuing on like that.

Why change anything? Games like that don’t happen often, and it was entertaining as hell.

50 yard line could be a safety.
LSU would lose by 2 points in most years.

WTF? Why?
No.
Just use the same goddamn rules in OT that you use in regulation - kick the fricking ball (it's a part of the game)!

Actually starting at the 35 might not be a bad idea. You're still starting in FG range for most teams. But it would make possessions last longer. Barrett Sallee was advocating starting at the 50. That's stupid.
But what's really foolish is making a change based on the LSU-aTm game. You don't change policy because of one rare incident. If overtime games typically went 4 or 5 overtimes, then sure. But they don't. In 23 years, 5 games went 7 OTs, one game went 6, and five went 5. A minor tweak could be to make teams go for two right from the start. I don't know what the numbers are, but I think going beyond three OTs is rare.

Somebody is eventually...
That's everyone's point. People don't seem to like "eventually." They want the game to end sooner.
