The reason people called it gimmicky was that one of it's core tenants was to prevent substitutions and blur the line on OL down field. Throw in all the speed sweeps and trick plays and walla.
Agree or disagree with that, whatever. But those were plain as day the backbone of the "gimmicky high school offense" cracks.
And once again, our run offense has zero to do with that. So the origins of this thread still make no sense

If you don't take care to tackle into the fricking sternum... well, they end up putting up billboards about you.

You can accomplish the same thing by simply not huddling. Are you suggesting Bama doesn’t incorporate the no huddle?

And the RPOs, and the read option. All of a sudden we are straying from just the up tempo aspect.

That was basically the Gus trick and they have adjusted the rules to help prevent that a bit.. when the offensive subs anybody they force them to wait until the defensive subs.
The bigger problem is the collection of rules that have changed over the past decade. The RPO is now the biggest issue and it's even becoming a issue in the NFL. What makes it successful is that they are allowing linemen to block downfield like it's a run. The defense basically cannot read the offense which means most of the time, they are on their heals.
Couple that with all the rules changes around not being able to touch the QB, can't hit the WRs etc.. it's turned into flag football.
I would even propose that QBs aren't really football players anymore. They don't ever really need to worry about getting hit, they just hand the ball off and throw it. Maybe once or twice a game somebody will touch them, but don't touch them high or that's a flag.
That is where the game is driving to, and don't get me started on kick offs. The kick off is now the most worthless event in the game. I always get a laugh when we call the hogs on kick off, or Georgia does their dog thing.. doesn't mean shite anymore because 90% of the time it's a touch back.
What's even more funny is that Arkansas' special teams are so bad that we fair catch it if it doesn't go into the end zone... lol, what a joke.
