In 2017, for the whole FBS season, roughly 1 out every 168 qtrs saw a KO or Punt returned for a TD.

Arkansas in its first 17 qtrs of 2018, gave up 2...

Stat provided by the guru himself, D. Bartoo.
....

Note to Chad... Hire a Special Teams coach.

Had to go to Dave Bartoo stats to prove how bad our special teams are?

Watch the last 5 years since John L and anyone can see that post Hocker and Breeding as specialists with the exception of Irwin-Hill, Baker one year and Korliss/De’Vion Warren KR TDs it trash.

Bad scholarship decisions, slow, bad angles, can’t reach end zone, sky kicks, 20-30 yd punts.

At this point, I'd even be open to bringing "smile" back as a ST coach. I don't care, just never let that man near the HC office and it's OK.

Why are people pretending ST's haven't been an issue since 2013?

The last consistent kicker we had was Hocker.

Irwin Hill and Baker were good punters.

Other than that we have been bad for a while.

BUT hiring a coach who obviously doesn't prioritize (or does a bad job doing so) special teams won't remedy that problem.

You can't blame Bert for Morris' inability to field a decent special team unit at SMU.

Morris needs to hire a special team coach ASAP.

I mean they were a 1-11 team when he got there. There's only so much you can do within the timeframe he was there. I'd wager kickers weren't that high on his list off the bat.

That is dumb. Special teams are a pretty important part of the game. Why wouldn't he try and find a kicker?
Why didn't he improve his special team to a respectable level by the time he left?

Let's compare 2017 Arkansas special teams vs. 2017 SMU special teams:

PAT
#54 Arkansas 41/42 = 97.6
#121 SMU 57/63 = 90.5

Field Goals
#70 Arkansas 16/22 = 72.7
#74 SMU 15/21 =71.4

Punting
#79 SMU = 40.61 average
#115 Arkansas = 38.59

Kickoffs
#80 Arkansas = 60.73 average
#121 SMU = 58.37 average

Punt Returns
#12 Arkansas = 12.75 average 0 TDs
#122 SMU = 3.71 average 0 TDs

Kickoff Returns
#65 Arkansas 21.27 yards and 1 TDs
#92 SMU = 19.48 yards 0 TDs

Opponents Punt Return (Punt Coverage)
#12 Arkansas = 3.64 average 0 TDs
#62 SMU = 6.70 average 0 TDs

Opponents Kick-Off Return (Kick Coverage)
#34 Arkansas = 19.34 average 1 TD
#113 SMU = 24.16 average 0 TDs

I also don't remember any coach (from Ford to Bielema) having to call time out because we couldn't get lined up for kickoff.

Or giving up a first down b/c we have two players with the same number on punt return

OR bullshite like this:

The only thing Morris has going for him is Chavis' defense and his recruiting.

Speaking of recruiting - according to 247 composite we are currently ranked #21 which is second best in the past 10+ years. #1 was Petrino's 2009 class at #20.

Bielema's best class was ranked #22 in 2015.

I'd imagine there are more pressing matters within a team that goes 2-10 than finding a kicker.

Kina like Bert's tendencies at Wisky of blowing games late in the 3rd and 4th qtrs. His past sure did follow him to Arkansas.

Again, why are we pretending our ST's haven't been shite since 2013? This isn't a Morris-exclusive issue.

They have been shite, now it's a Morris issue that needs to be addressed.

When he hires a ST Coach then I'll believe he's committed to fixing the problem.

How about we let him get an actual class in first?

Just not convinced a dedicated special teams coach would make that much of a difference. You don't have that much practice time available to dedicate to it. Alabama's special teams coordinator also coaches tight ends so he doesn't spend 100% of his time on it either and yet theirs is great because they have great players.

We have an OL coach but it still sucks because we have former walk-ons starting. When you have Joe Adams, Dennis Johnson, Zack Hocker and Dylan Breeding of course the special teams are going to look good. We just don't have any playmakers right now anywhere.
