From Clemson to the wilds of the Chattooga River on the GA-NC-SC border it is 45 minutes. I did plenty of weekend trout fishing up in those parts and it is some of the most beautiful country on the east coast. Places like Turtleback Falls are approximately an hour away.

That's fine and all but Athens is 1 hr from Toccoa and you never hear Georgia people describe Athens as in the mountains.

It's nice that it is close, but it's a bit disengenuous to claim Clemson is in it. A lot of places could claim things an hour away.

Long Creek, SC is one of the prettiest places in this country east of the Mississippi.

You can catch striper, smallmouth bass, rainbow and brown trout in Columbia city limits.
