That... by definition... is academics.
It literally is a rule for student athletes about academics.
It couldn't be any more academic than... do you have a degree? Yes? Then go ahead and transfer to pursue an academic grad program and feel free to play football right away if that is what you love to do.

You’re using the fact that a rule exists to justify the rule.
I understand This is the rule the students agree to.
But that alone doesn’t make it a good rule.
You’ve yet to illustrate how this rule benefits the individual as a student.
It’s about sports.
