While true, Detroit could lose the rights to the #1 overall pick if he had come back. Seniors have zero leverage. Juniors have another option than signing on the dotted line.

You do realize they would get the #2 pick the following draft if Mize didn’t sign right? The tigers have the majority of the leverage here. The teams generally sign players to slightly above the value of the following pick because of the leverage tilting towards the teams.

No, if he didn’t sign DET would get that pick again next year. Or maybe it’s #2. Either way, not much chance for him to improve on 7.5M. Take the money, and get started on your career.
