Eh, I'd say it's more a mental test than a skill test. Sure, you have to be on your game, but it's more about taking your medicine and putting bad holes behind you. Everyone is going to have a bad hole here and there. The winner is usually the one that can put those behind him and grind out pars.

Just look at a lot of the past winners. Many of them aren't who we'd call especially skilled golfers. For many, it's their only major win.

And that's why I like the U.S. Open. It is probably the least predictable of the 3 U.S. majors (the British Open being the least predictable overall).

When I was growing up there were guys who made their careers as US Open specialist. Kinda like clay courters in tennis.
Andy North, Scott Simpson, Steve Jones, Lee Janzen. I don't know if Hale Irwin contended for many majors, but he was a US Open threat
