could be wrong but I don't think anyone is saying don't play him if we need him just to preserve the redshirt.

The advocates are saying, it makes no sense to play him just to play him. In other words, is JF11 get hurt, of course you play him. But playing meaningless time against a scrub opponent isn't going to make him any better. At that point save the rest shirt until we need him.

You don't need to declare a redshirt up front. If we need him because JF11 gets hurt, then you play him. Otherwise, you don't.

It isn't just playing after an injury.

We disagree about getting our backup ready to play.

If Eason gets hurt against app state, we might be fine with a cold Fromm to come in and lead us to victory.

However, if Eason got hurt in the seccg, is a cold fromm ready to come in and lead us to victory?

That is the preparation that I am adamant about.

If the program is so desperate for a redshirt and class separation, do it in year 2. Not year 1. Accelerate fields' learning curve and then pump the brakes.

No preparation can replace live game snaps. If fields is our 2nd best quarterback this season , he needs to be almost as prepared as fromm. If he isn't end best, then redshirt away.

The thing is he's not cold or unprepared. He's still practicing every day. He's still getting meaningful reps. He's still preparing every day. It's not like he's sitting on the bench not doing anything until he plays in a game.

That's not true at all. That's the whole reason teams prepare the way they do. So they are prepared for real game snaps.

Kirby's whole methodology is to make practice harder than the games and the players themselves have even said as much. The games are easy because they are so prepared. Plus, he's facing much better competition everyday than he would be against Austin Peay, UMass, or MTSU.

JF11 was clearly prepared to lay when he came in despite never having a live snap. The point is it's called garbage time for a reason. It's not because those snaps are meaningful. It's not like he's going to be coming in while we're down two scores and trying to mount a comeback.
