So, basically he's not adding any loft at contact. He's just taking away the forward loft that exists because of the new alignment from some fancy new putter grip deal he learned.

Basically, ya. Most putters come with a standard loft around 3 degrees (I think - not a pro, just an avid player/fan). If he leads his stroke with his hands, this will effectively decrease the loft (ex: 3 degree putter face, but presenting at -1 degrees since his hands in front) and cause him to hit down on the ball. When you see the ball bounce a little bit when its hit, this is usually what happens.
So he bought a new putter/bent the face a little to have a higher degree so that his new stroke will effectively present 0 degree loft.
Now I really want to get out and hit some balls lol.
